This historic event will be the first statewide convention on secession in the United States since North Carolina voted to secede from the Union on May 20, 1861.
| Yeah, so nothing's happening right away. But is the tip of the iceberg?
AKA, will the United States of America exist a generation from now? |

| | Re Vermont Re-Independence? | | So, you invade Iraq, you invade Vermont, what's the difference?
Come to think of it, Bush might not invade Vermont -- no oil. |

| | Re Vermont Re-Independence? | | Seriously, guys, people in Vermont talking secession isn't a big deal. Heck, even a convention to discuss the possibility isn't a big deal. It's what people in Vermont do when the cable's out and it's too cold to go visiting.
And Vermont may not have oil, but it does have cows. Methane could well be the wave of the future.

| | Re Vermont Re-Independence? | | LOL, I don't really see this as any different than the UP in Michigan going through the same motions every few years. Some of the Florida keys do the same when the people there get bored.
Yes, I think that the US will be here a generation from now. Despite people being all pissy, things really haven't changed much -- just the ability to get information and find people who think similarly has changed. |

| | Re Vermont Re-Independence? | | The Yoopers don't need to secede from the Union--they're already in their own world and pay no attention to the rest of us unenlightened ones.

| | Re Vermont Re-Independence? | | Drive through southern Oregon and very northern California and count the State of Jefferson signs. That region has threatened secession from Oregon and California for years - however they aren't forming a separate nation.

| | Re Vermont Re-Independence? | | If at first you don't secede, try try again.
Vermont, like SC in 1861, is too small to be a republic and too large to be an insane asylum.

| | Re Vermont Re-Independence? | | The official state tourism motto of Texas is, "It's like a whole 'nother country." So there's that.
I understand the Florida Keys seceded in '79 but nobody noticed. You'll see the occasional "Conch Republic" flag down there.

| | Re Vermont Re-Independence? | | Here it is - The Republic of Texas. Quote:
To answer this question we must begin by telling you what the Republic of Texas is not. The Republic of Texas is not an organization, a social club, a fraternity, a militia, a terrorist group, or a political party. The Republic of Texas is an independent nation comprised of Texans or Texians.
The Republic of Texas is a constitutional republic; a government with very limited national powers. The nation is currently in transition as we begin to move toward independence. |
