Forget arming the teachers, how about teaching the kids how to attack a gunman? Teaching kids to fight back against classroom invaders - CNN.com Quote: BURLESON, Texas (AP) -- Youngsters in a suburban Fort Worth, Texas, school district are being taught not to sit there like good boys and girls with their hands folded if a gunman invades the classroom, but to rush him and hit him with everything they've got -- books, pencils, legs and arms.
"Getting under desks and praying for rescue from professionals is not a recipe for success," said Robin Browne, a major in the British Army reserve and an instructor for Response Options, the company providing the training to the Burleson schools.
That kind of fight-back advice is all but unheard of among schools, and some fear it will get children killed.
| Frankly, I'm appalled that this sort of thing has to even be thought of, but that's more from the standpoint of 'I can't believe life has gotten this bad' rather than a 'how dare they' standpoint. Part of me says it's a good idea, part of me says somebody's got a screw loose.

All in favour of that. True, someone's going to get hurt, but it can prevent the gunman from killing all of the kids, if the kids are trained ahead of time. |

I don't know. If the gunman is a whacko extrondinaire, like the guy in the Amish country, he'll probably just start shooting willy nilly. No matter what it is a bad situation. And little kids may be too scared to do anything.
I do think we have to teach the kids to be proactive tho. I don't think a passive group is the answer, but an intelligent one will hopefully stay alive. This scenario is my greatest fear. Our school is locked down like a fortress. Neither teachers nor students can open a door for anyone. They must all come to through the main office. I know we are safe, but then again, whackos can be found anywhere.
