Virtual Rape Is Traumatic, but Is It a Crime? -
Personally, I think that something like this is mean-spirited. And, I can understand how online life can get under your skin and make your real life unhappy. BUT, I have also learned that online life is something you can walk away from and you can learn to compartmentalize. If the threats do not extend into the real world, I don't think police should be involved.
Online communities need to be self-policing to some extent. The site/community owner is probably the 'police' in these kinds of cases and has to set the standards for their own little neck of the online world.
(please note that the story indicates the involvement of the police in this case is believed to be a hoax and that this is more a theoretical discussion than an actual case.)
