Shake Laying the Wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

I'm really bothered that President Bush didn't lay the wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier today. I know that Cheney was there, but I think that Veterans Day is an important observance. We have so many troops overseas risking their lives, and the fact that the Commander in Chief opted not to be there for the ceremony really rubs me the wrong way.

I know that he did appear at a memorial ceremony for 4 fallen soldiers in Texas, but not being at Arlington seems very disrespectful to me. Our troops don't have the option to be on vacation right now. I wish Bush had made it his business to be at Arlington.

Re Laying the Wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

Don't forget, he thinks it would be a conflict of interest for the POTUS to also be Commander-in-Chief. He thinks he has NOTHING to do with the military other than ordering them around.

Re Laying the Wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier

I agree, Wormie. Even if he was weekending at the ranch, he does have a private plane and pilot at his disposal at all times.

I belong to a peace group that has a 'weekly witness' at the park every Sunday. Last week we went to our National Cemetery for the Veterans Day services after our witness. I had never really strolled through the cemetery, and was shocked, walking to my car, to find rows upon rows of tombstones for "unknown soldier #1324, unknown soldier #1325...." It was so heartbreaking, row upon row of unknown soldiers. I guess it never occurred to me that all national cemeteries had tombstones of unknown soldiers.

Given my location, I am sure that many were soldiers from the Civil War, perhaps Union and Confederate soldiers laying side by side. There were other tombstones for Civil War soldiers not far away.

Gad, Frazz! What a story. I'm sitting here with my eyes burning just reading about that -- the idea that these people gave their lives for us and we can't even honor their names.

As for the Dipwit -- what did anyone expect?
