Some Abstinence Programs Mislead Teens, Report Says (washingtonpost.com)

The report concluded that two of the curricula were accurate but the 11 others, used by 69 organizations in 25 states, contain unproved claims, subjective conclusions or outright falsehoods regarding reproductive health, gender traits and when life begins. In some cases, Waxman said in an interview, the factual issues were limited to occasional misinterpretations of publicly available data; in others, the materials pervasively presented subjective opinions as scientific fact.

I have nothing at all against including a discussion about abstinence, but last week I had a total WTF moment when #1 came home just fuming. Planned Parenthood and the Gay and Lesbian Student Coalition no longer distribute free condoms on campus. Furthermore, since PP was giving a short seminar on pregnancy and birth control for young adults, #1 went to listen. And sat there slack-jawed as the woman teaching the seminar said that withdrawal would not protect against STDs, although many young people choose to use it as a birth control method.

I would have been out of my seat and rushing the podium if I'd been there. Withdrawl???WTFF? Why on earth would they even consider stating it that way- or mentioning it at all except as in,'this here doesn't work, so if you're fixing to go to it like weasels, get condoms!'? I was stunned. past stunned- pissed as hell.

#1 went to the AIDS Committee and got a case of condoms and gave them to the various orgs to distribute- and they were pathetically grateful, since supposedly, they are no longer allowed to buy them. The only funny thing was when #1 crossed the border with them and had to declare them. He told the Customs guy he had a bunch of condoms, and the man told him he could only import them for personal use- then asked how many he had. When #1 said,"1000", the man just looked at him, grinned and said,"Damn!".

But back to the sheer idiocy that is going to end up killing our kids:
