| | Re Election Tampering Conviction in Ohio 2004 | | Remember Bush supporters saying "well NOW he's elected" after 2004, in the hopes that Bush detractors would finally drop that tired refrain? I do, and I have to agree!
Does it really matter how your president gets into office? It's not like we make a big deal out of democracy. In the end, it's the president's stellar leadership which has resulted in such success all around.
Diplomacy is thriving, allowing our military to keep watch over a peaceful world.
The job market is strong, with a middle class looking to a long and secure future. Never mind the stock market, where gains are solid and there's nary a bubble in sight. Sure, they're not big gains, because it's really the middle class that's coming out ahead, rather than corporations and CEOs. When was the last time you saw a layoff? The strength of the equity of your home should, alone, give you a feeling of security, as home values are as strong as bedrock. Equity is like money in the bank!
And I used to laugh when Bush supporters used to say they were voting for him because they wanted a strong dollar (I'm thinking of Jeff here, specifically). But now I understand completely your concerns; a strong dollar is great!
Tax equity. Tight control of government spending, leading to a small and reasonable surplus after middle class tax controls.
Perhaps the thing for which we are most thankful: an unprecedented feeling of unity in the country under our leader who surprisingly reached out to his opponents after 2000 and reversed what could have been bitter divisions. And on the heels of that success, which left his detractors flat-footed, he reached out to the world after 9/11 to form an amazing and lasting coalition of goodwill, uniting the world in a plan to work together to combat global criminal organizations who would engage in terrorism by denying them safe haven rather than pouring fuel on the fires of extremism.
I don't know about you, but I for one am glad for our current president, no matter how dishonestly he got into and remained in office.

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one around here who still has his head screwed on straight and supports our commander-in-chief. I have my doubts about a website where people say they love America, but they aren't willing to put aside their doubts and embrace the Bush phenomenon. The most important civil liberty is to have the government tell you it's keeping you safe.
God bless,

| | Re Election Tampering Conviction in Ohio 2004 | | What's most important is making sure things like this don't happen again.
One change I would advocate is having two Election Commissioners in every state--one from each of the two major parties in that state. An Election Commissioner should be neutral and fair--not placing 10 times as many voting machines in the Republican suburbs as (s)he does in the Democratic cities--as was done in Ohio in 2004.
Since it is probably impossible to find a partisan Election Commissioner of either party who would be neutral and fair, the best we can do is have joint Election Commissioners who'll keep each other honest. |

That's a good idea. It works here on the local level in the Buffalo, N.Y. area. Not having it nationally just ensures that whichever party is in power is free to get up to all kinds of mischief. |

| | Re Election Tampering Conviction in Ohio 2004 | | You're all overlooking two essential facts.
1. The prosecutor didn't claim that the election results were affected. (Which any prosecutor who had any evidence of this would have, given the blockbuster nature of those potential charges and the fact that prosecutors with political ambitions want to make names for themselves).
2. One of the defendants was a Democrat. | | |
