OMG! The Gift of Gaffe

See Drudge: Obama referring to Palin says "You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig".

Now who are those swing voters Obama needs: Oh, yeah,...

And who has he just hugely offended. Duh....

And people think this guy is smart.

Re OMG! The Gift of Gaffe

Maybe Obama was just using the same words which McCain pointed at Ms. Clinton.

Or maybe it's just a common phrase that most of us heard used before.

Every report on it that I can find says that the line was spoken about McCains plans for change - not about Palin. Since Palin made the lipstick/pit bull remark, some took it to reference that.

Can you find a transcript of the speech? I'd like to read it in context.

Hillary Clinton's health-care plan, he said it was "eerily reminiscent" of the failed plan she offered as first lady in the early 1990s.
"I think they put some lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig," he said of her proposal.

Sounds to me like he was referring to the plan not the woman.

Re OMG! The Gift of Gaffe

This is what I found....

Ben Smith's Blog: Obama: 'Lipstick on a pig' - Politico.com

Evidently it is quite the common phrase......

wordwizard.com - View topic - put lipstick on a pig

Even Dick Cheyney used the phrase back in 04.....
sisu: "You can put lipstick on a pig"

I couldn't find a transcript of the entire speech, but a longer quote reads:

Quote:
“That’s not change. That’s just calling something the same thing something different. You know you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig. You know you can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change, it’s still going to stink after eight years. We’ve had enough of the same old thing.”
He can say it wasn't targeted at Palin, but the entire quote seems to take a swipe at both Palin (lipstick on a pig) and McCain (stinking old fish). Maybe he didn't mean it that way. But it was a stupid ill-considered thing to say and he should have thought before speaking.

JP, I'm curious - is this more sarcasm or are you serious? I value your opinion - you and Brian are two of the smartest people I've ever known. I've seen problems with the Obama campaign for a while and they seem to be in meltdown right now. I view him and Palin about the same - not quite ready for primetime - and I'm willing to take less experience in a VP candidate than the top spot on the ticket, but I realize I'm in the minority in this forum. Do you think Obama can still pull out a win? Or has he sunk his own battleship?

Re OMG! The Gift of Gaffe

I'm sure JP was just being sarcastic. The election is still seven weeks away. Whether this is a so-called 'macaca' moment remains to be seen. But it shows that like the 'bitter' remarks and the 'small town mayor' remarks, Obama is really out of touch with main street America. He's lived in Honolulu, Indonesia, Los Angeles, New York City and Chicago. He has no idea what is going to offend people in Dayton or Colorado Springs. He thinks small town Iowans buy arugula at Whole Foods. So he just offended women who may be fence sitters with the lipstick remark.

Do I think he meant it? Definitely. He's not the rockstar anymore and he's rattled.

I'm not sure about the fish one but the lipstick comment definitely got a reaction from the crowd and there really didn't seem to be enough besides the lipstick/Palin allusion to warrant the response. It just seems unlikely that Obama wouldn't have known the reaction given how scripted his speeches generally are.

Personally I was reasonably impressed with how 'clean' Obama had been playing the election prior to his securing the nomination and was surprised and disappointed with how quickly he turned to attacks right after that. He did ease back a bit after he got himself Biden as a proxy attacker (which seems to be how he used Hillary) but now since things have tightened up a bit he is back at it.

The lipstick thing gives him a bit of deniability as an attack (it is 'just a saying') but personally I haven't ever heard the saying before and it seemed like he really had to work at it to get it into the punchline of the speech.

That is an old saying. I've heard it before, I've even used it. I am not an Obama fan, although I'll probably vote for him because of Palin in the veep seat, and although I dislike a lot about the guy, this doesn't make me think anything at all about him. Call me when you want to talk about issues, 'k?

Re OMG! The Gift of Gaffe

Meanwhile no one cares when candidates recycle their acceptance speeches as they tour around, complete with the factual inaccuracies and falsehoods that have since been pointed out publicly by many sources, but that's about policy and platform so no one cares.

Re OMG! The Gift of Gaffe

I heard a longer quote on the radio, and to me he was clearly talking about policy.

I think that if people think it was about Palin, that says more about Palin than it does about Obama. I don't remember much of her speach other than the lipstick/pitbull line, and the thanks/no thanks about the bridge. Sure the press has something to do with that, but she keeps using the same speech and the same lines.

I really don't think that Obama was directing his comment at Palin. If he did, it wasn't nice, but she is the candidate that compared herself to a dog - not just any dog, but a troubled breed.

I care. She keeps repeating the same non-truths over and over again - to me that means she doesn't really have much else to say.

From your lips to God's ear...

(Warning Deb - Lefty Blog Ahead!!!)

Quote:
On the trail in Virginia just now, Obama answered the McCain "lipstick" attack, refusing to engage the central phony charge and using it to cast McCain as unwilling to discuss serious issues. Obama also directly attacked the news media for turning the "controversy" into a major story. It's worth quoting his response at length:

Quote:
Some of you may have -- I'm assuming you guys have heard this, watching the news. I'm talking about John McCain's economic politics, I say, "This is more of the same, you can put lipstick on a pig but it's still a pig."

And suddenly they say, "Oh, you must be talking about the governor of Alaska."

[Laughter from audience]

See it would be funny, it would be funny except -- of course the news media all decided that that was the lead story yesterday. They'd much rather have the story -- this is the McCain campaign -- would much rather have the story about phony and foolish diversions than about the future.

This happens every election cycle. Every four years. This is what we do. We've got an energy crisis. We have an education system that is not working for too many of our children and making us less competitive. We have an economy that is creating hardship for families all across America. We've got two wars going on, veterans coming home not being cared for -- and this is what they want to talk about! this is what they want to spend two of the last 55 days talking about.

You know who ends up losing at the end of the day? It's not the Democratic candidate, It's not the republican candidate. It's you, the American people. because then we go another year or another four years or another eight years without addressing the issues that matter to you. Enough.

I don't care what they say about me, but I love this country too much to let them take over another election with lies and phony outrage and swift-boat politics. Enough is enough.

This is an old expression. It's been used many times and so I might have agreed that it wasn't directed at Palin except for the fact that just the week before in front of 40 million viewers she made the lipstick joke. Obama's audience laughed and hooted. They got the analogy.

Presidential elections are about more than just policy. They are about the individuals' character. I seem to recall one candidate famously saying "Words matter". Hmmm.

Hey kids! Let's talk about character!

Quote:
Why isn't someone bringing up McCain's past with women? The Chelsea Clinton - Janet Reno ugly joke? How about the gorilla rape joke? Leaving his crippled wife for a beauty queen? Dating exotic dancers - per Fred Thompson?

This man not only has no honor. He has no shame. He's the prohibitionist who rails against the drink in public but gets wasted every night in private.
