| | I found out that someone I know in a professional capacity has a mail-order bride
What do you think of this? Do you know anyone who had a mail order bride?
I think the process takes away all the romance, I worry that many mail order brides could be slaves or concubines, and I worry they will get abused. Plus, the idea of paying for a bride seems to me like selling human beings. I'm shocked, quite honestly. What do you all think? |

| | I've got an Indian friend whose parents arranged his marriage and I think money changed hands in one way or the other, but not quite mail-order. I think it's weird.

| | Once upon a time I gave some consideration to it. After two failed marriages and all the BS in the dating scene it looked rather attractive. Then Tracy came along. |

| | So now I'll address your question seriously, Margaret.
I do know someone who's brother has a mail order bride. I think it's odd, but different cultures have different levels of acceptance and methods of arranging marriage. If both parties are consensual, of age, and free to marry, I see nothing wrong with it.

| | Margaret - I don't think I can give a clear answer to your question. I think that for some people it's probably fine, for other's it's probably really creepy. I wouldn't want to form an opinion based solely on the "mail-ordered" part.
Look at the couple, look at their relationship, and form your opinion based on how they treat each other and how they relate more than on how they met. |

| | It depends what TYPE of mail-order bride. Like (mj? pre-caffeine here) said, arranged marriages are still very common in some cultures. I once had someone tell me to get my resume together if I wanted to find a spouse. PhD, professional, and thought nothing amiss of getting his wife that way. He got a bunch of resumes and pictures, picked a couple to meet, and then chose the one he wanted. No muss, no fuss.
Of course, I was all :O but that's not my culture.
Then again, if it's a possibly underaged girl from say, some Asian country with a history of selling girls into prostitution, my hackles might raise a bit. | | |
