Tis the season
for Boycotts.

The American Family Association is calling for a boycott on The Gap for their new ad that, to me, seems to be aiming at all holiday-inclusiveness. The War on Christmas continues....

Quote:For years, Gap has refused to use the word Christmas in its television commercials, newspaper ads and in-store promotions, despite tens of thousands of consumer requests to recognize Christmas and in spite of repeated requests from AFA to do the same.

Last year, Gap issued this politically-correct statement to Christmas shoppers: "Gap recognizes that many traditions are celebrated throughout this season and we feel it is important to display holiday signage that is inclusive to everyone."

Personally, I think the ad is cute (though certainly not traditional) and it does mention Christmas, along with Hanukkah, Kwanza, Solstice etc.

Wouldn't it be nice if everyone could just peacefully enjoy the holiday season?

How Christian of them to snub the Gap for respecting all people.

I don't think the Gap needs to worry too much. I doubt the folks who are "boycotting" shop there much anyway.

This is just getting so annoying. At least I don't get emails about it anymore. And I quite liked the commercial!

RE: Tis the season
I found the ad and realized I'd already seen it. I can't imagine why anyone would be offended. I thought the Christmas war people were offended by a generic "Happy Holidays". This is anything but generic.

Yep, change it to "you use" instead of "they use" and it would be perfect!

Why change it? "men" goes with "they" more than "you."

I guess I was thinking of it as more of a quote:

RE: Tis the season
To me it's still a mis-match - going from the general "men" to the specific "you."

Going with the traditional. "Peace on Earth, Goodwill to People" just doesn't have the same ring to it Wink

I remember an assignment I did when I was in (Catholic) college...you had to "de-gender" something and see if it had the same punch. I chose to sing three hymns (mostly because I was lazy and didn't want to put together a poster or anything visual).

God Rest Ye Merry Gentle Persons doesn't have quite the same ring. I can't remember which other hymns I did, but they sounded quite ridiculous and made an impression on the instructor.

RE: Tis the season
I got an email today telling me to send a Christmas card to the ACLU, because they are a bunch of athiests that want to ruin Christmas. But not to be "rude" in my card, because that would be unchristian. The point was to clog the ACLU's system, since they can't tell if you are sending a donation in the card or not. Cute. And very christian. Rolleyes

Because the ACLU's stated mission is "to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the United States," which, somehow limits their ability to celebrate Christmas.

I just don't freaking get these people.

I dunno Margaret...I'm thinking that the they believe their agenda to be to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties that they are guaranteed to celebrate Christmas not "the holiday with no mention of Christmas allowed". Big Grin

RE: Tis the season
What's funny is the ACLU has taken on many cases defending churches and religion.

How the ACLU Didn't Steal Christmas

Quote:As part of our justice mission, we work hard to protect the rights of free religious expression for all people, including Christians. For example, we recently defended the First Amendment rights of a Baptist minister to preach his message on public streets in southern Indiana. The ACLU intervened on behalf of a Christian valedictorian in a Michigan high school, which agreed to stop censoring religious yearbook entries, and supported the rights of Iowa students to distribute Christian literature at their school.

Ah, but try it with "gentle folk"... fits the language and doesn't sound so bad
