Yesterday, I was cleaning out the apartment of a relative who died in a car accident. His car was hit head-on by a drunk driver.

While we were cleaning, we were looking through my relative's papers for some important documents. We found a spiral notebook that was mostly blank. Only the first page had any writing.

There were two columns of text in my relative's handwriting. The second colum had his name and address. The first column was the a series of related phrases, written several times. "drunk driver" "driving drunk" "young drunk drivers", etc.

Those of us who were cleaning out the apartment started crying, and one of them said something rather interesting. He said, "People who are going to die know it. They sense it."

Do you think that's true? Do you believe people have an idea of their death and when it is coming and maybe even how? Maybe not full knowledge, but a subliminal feeling or hunch?

Wow. That's an odd story and it must have been hard to find that notebook.

I have friends that are very very spiritual - not religious, but spiritual in the way of having had previous lives, believing that the spirit lives on and comes back in a new life, etc. Friends that can "see" or "sense" things. I know many others poo-poo these ideas, but I've seen enough to not question it - to just accept it. I myself do not have this "gift", but I think that some people do, and that those people could have an idea about these things.
I know, that while I'm not that in touch, I have a sixth sense that has been right often. I tend to be a worrier. I worry a lot - and often for no reason, but there have been a several times in my life when I had a sense of dread - and I just KNEW something was wrong - on on those occasions, I was right.
I believe in the power of thought and prayer, so yes - I think its true. And I like to think that it allows for peace and acceptance in the person who has that gift. I hope that is true for your relative, and I hope that as shocking as that was, it brings some peace to you too.

I am really sorry about your loss, Amy. Having to do the apartment clean up must have been really difficult.

Your story about the notebook is pretty incredible, that's downright spooky. But no, I don't believe that as a rule, people who are healthy have a foresight of their death. On the other hand, I do believe in preminitions when they happen. I've had plenty of them myself.

I don't have a story exactly like that, but similar enough to give your experience some validity.

My stepmother was always the picture of health. Yet, she throughout her life she had one irrational health related fear: that she would lose her eyesight.

Her good health fortune continued well into her 70's. What finally did her in? She developed a series of unrelated eye disorders that, in combination with each other, and a unfortunate car accident during treatment, rendered her completely blind in her last couple of months of life.

The accident caused an incomplete spinal cord injury that left her severely paralized, but did not threaten her life. She literally died of grief over her loss of sight.

Somehow, she went through her entire life with a vision of the end.

there are two main ways in order to see the thing, and infinite shadings between it.
