For instinct I mean what it forces we to react in mechanical way.
I make a question to you:
Today (2006) are they still necessary to a man? (male and feminine)
You believe of to be free, thoughts of to be enslaved and of wanting to free of it, or you have not never thought to us?
After we could speak about like getting free (if it interests) |
Good question.
Are instincts still necessary? That depends. Is survival of the species necessary? There are days when I'm of the opinion that we are just a plague upon the planet and perhaps a little thinning of the herd wouldn't hurt. But, I digress...
No matter what we might think of ourselves we really are just animals. And, without basic instincts no animal can survive. But, I think that we've evolved to a point where we are standing on a threshold between worlds. We are part animal and part something else. The same instincts that allow us to survive are often our undoing.
We have a strong drive to reproduce, yet many of us cannot or prefer not to care for our offspring. For many it is simply a pursuit of pleasure with little regard for consequence.
Our instinct to bond as social groups for the protection of each individual may have worked fine when the societies were made up of a few dozen souls. But when inflated to groups of thousands or millions the propensity to defend and protect becomes an inclination towards war. No longer a defense mechanism to protect a few at the possible cost of a few, it impacts people globally and with modern technology puts the entire species at risk.
We eat to live, but many of us surrounded by plenty have chosen to live to eat. I confess. I'm guilty of this. Just how much do we need to consume? And, by consume, I'm talking about more than just food.
I could go on, but Uno's probably wearing out his dictionary by now.
Suffice it to say that I believe that we do need our instincts. But, we also need to realize that they were wired into us for our good, no for our undoing. We need to use our intellect to supplement the basics that nature has provided us with. Otherwise, we just have to accept that we are animals and be satisfied with their lot.
