Readership

I've been writing film reviews on epinions going into my fifth month now. As of yesterday, I posted my 13th review. So far, I've only garnered a cult-sized following of only 340 hits. Since I'm still the new kid here, and since I do not yet know how to maneuver myself around either website, I am certainly open for any suggestions on how to increase my readership.

It will not be my habit to post reviews of every theater release I seen. And I will not offer reviews of the blockbusters only to have them swallowed up by the flood of reviews posted here after a big opening. I review small, intimate films that would otherwise be overlooked by epinion subscribers.

There also appears to be many suggestions, offerings, and essays on these websites about how to "write a review." I will not offer any personal suggestions on how to accomplish that. But I believe that each of my reviews are examples on exactly how to do just that.

Forgive my blatant self-advertising; but I know of no other way to wave my own flag. I believe I have an informative and entertaining voice. Good writing is entertainment. Try me and see if you agree.

One of my most-read Epinions is a movie review -- actually, it was part of a write-off, and listed several films (I selected several films that had good lines) -- its readership comes largely from internet searches -- I didn't even realise it was garnering the audience it had until it showed up on the most popular list with thousands of hits. I didn't do anything at all to publicise it.

Of course, that took some time to do, in order for search engines to find it.

In the meanwhile, until search engines find your reviews, don't be shy about plugging yourself here (put your profile link in your signature!) and other places on the web.

Your old music cannot sustain you through a life, not if you're someone who listens to music every day, at every opportunity. You need input, because pop music is about freshness, about Nelly Furtado and the maddeningly memorable fourth track on a first album by a band you saw on a late-night TV show. And no, that fourth track is not as good as anything on Pet Sounds or Blonde on Blonde or What's Going On, but when was the last time you played Pet Sounds? - Songbook by Nick Hornby

Welcome to EA, houston critic! One of the best board tools to increasing your readership is to add a signature line with a link to your profile page (click on the User CP button at the top of the page) and to post your new reviews in Just In.

Another tip is to actively engage in conversations here - if you enjoy movies, Reel People is a good place to hang out since some of the site's top movie reviewers seem to spend a lot of time there. I know that when I see thoughtful or entertaining posts from an EA member, I'm much more likely to check out his/her reviews (especially if there's a clickable link in the sig line).

Deb

Hi, Houstoncritic. Let me tell you, I feel your pain. Here are a few suggestions:

* Post links to your reviews in the "Just In" sections here at Eaforums and at Bluehawq's Nest (Bluehawq.com).

* Get your name around. Read and rate other reviews (probably Movies since that's your category). Leave comments, too, if possible.
