Hilton and Expedia Partner

Expedia is thrilled because Hilton is promoting the chain, including Hampton and Doubletree. Hilton is vowing that they will offer the lowest price regardless of channel -- phone, web, whatever.

But here's the rub.

In an effort to cut down on commissions, Hilton Honors members may be "warned" after booking twice through sites such as Priceline or Travelocity and can be booted from the program or lose future points.

What's that about?

I remember arguing with a Hampton Inn marketer several years ago after I had spent dozens of nights that year in their properties. She told me there was no need for a loyalty program because the discounts were "built into the price". Then Marriott's Fairfield and Courtyard ate their lunch. I was one of the defectors. And Hampton/Hilton lost at least 50 room nights a year from me alone, to say nothing of the bad-mouthing to my staff.

Talk about short-sighted marketing. So, do any of you belong to hotel loyalty programs? What's your favorite and why?

Your old music cannot sustain you through a life, not if you're someone who listens to music every day, at every opportunity. You need input, because pop music is about freshness, about Nelly Furtado and the maddeningly memorable fourth track on a first album by a band you saw on a late-night TV show. And no, that fourth track is not as good as anything on Pet Sounds or Blonde on Blonde or What's Going On, but when was the last time you played Pet Sounds? - Songbook by Nick Hornby
