| | 811 Seventh Avenue (at 53rd Street) | | So... um... is that anywhere near Central Park? Like within 20 miles of it?
And how flat is that area... and things within a 30 mile radius of it?
Just color me curious...

| | Okay, so when are you staying at the Sheraton?
Yes, it's flat. Yes, it's near Central Park (if you consider 6 blocks near).
And, if I recall correctly, the only real hills right around there are in the park itself. However, 30 miles is pretty far. I'm sure you'll hit a killer hill or two.

| | That's where Event Eve is. I'm trying to get an idea of what I'm in for. We were betting that we'd be camped out in Central Park.
How far was your event eve from the route? |

| | We didn't have an event eve. We had a Day 0 that was at the starting point. That just entailed registration around noonish. We were on our own that night.
Sounds like you'll be seeing a good bit of the city. Our group missed out on that.

| | Ok, event eve sounds pretty much the same as day zero. Registration, and videos and stuff. At least, I think that's when we see videos and stuff.
My team and I are betting we're sleeping in central park. Where else would there be a open area in NYC to house a tent city? My teammates are scared of that prospect. I'm just thinking that there will be so many of us that there will have to be safety in numbers. I'm not afraid of the park -- I'm just afraid that I can't keep my gaurd up when I'm sleeping. That scares me. I'd rather sleep in a tent in Connecticut |

| | If it's the same thing we had, there won't be a tent city provided that night. You'll have to get your own hotel room. The organizers arrange for discounts and provide you with a list a few weeks before the event.
Do you know where opening ceremonies are yet?

| | Don't know ANYTHING about the route. They're not telling us until probably a week before the event, to avoid route change problems that you guys experienced.
I know there won't be a tent city on event eve. I am sooo bad with judging distances in my brain, but, 26 miles from the Sheraton must still be "city", right? |

| | Not necessarily. 26 miles west and you'd be in NJ. 26 miles east and you're in LI. North brings you into Westchester. South brings you into Brooklyn. Past that you'd have to swim.
It's not that big a city. It's just densely packed.
You can, however, make a 26 mile loop within the 5 boros. That's what the NYC marathon does.

| | I bet we have to go North then. Although, I believe the route out will be like half-moon shaped (more or less) and the route back will be pretty much a straight line. That's how they keep drawing the route. It looks like we'll only get 13 mi from our original destination, then we travel 13 miles back.
What is 13 miles from the Sheraton, and where can we sleep? LOL |

| | My guess? And remember, it's only a guess. Van Cortlandt Park. It's in the Bronx. It's rather large and it's the right distance.
Where to sleep? In the tent city. There's not much else around there. Unless you want to fight one of the animals in the zoo for a bed.

| | While the security alerts have been changing for the rest of the country--from yellow to orange and back to yellow, etc., I heard that New York has been on red alert since 9/11.
That means they have more police and National Guard protection than anywhere else in the country.
When a friend visited NYC during Memorial Day weekend, she said you couldn't go on a subway or down a block without seeing policemen or National Guard members. That's because the alert signals were up.
I am certain that there will be plenty of security, both public and private, to make this event safe for you.
Good luck. |

| | One of my teammates is originally from the Bronx. She is guessing Pellham Park (or something like that) for tent city.
If it is not the Bronx, she's guessing Brooklyn.
I hope there is lots of security too LOL. |

| | Wherever you will be, Margaret, I wouldn't worry.
First off, if this is a large event, the police will normally assign more than adequate security. And they are very good at it.
And NYC just ain't what it used to be. It's now one of the safest big cities in the country. It's crime rate is pretty low and still declining.
Relax and enjoy. You'll be just as safe as if you never left your livingroom.

How is the route laid out?
Each event starts and ends in the same place. On Saturday morning, participants will leave the starting point and walk toward the Wellness Village which is "home away from home" for the night. On Sunday, everyone walks back to the starting location.
When will we know what the route is?
Though you won't get specific route cues prior to the event, a few months out we'll provide start and end points and general information on the route in each city.
| Sounds like the 5 borough NY marathon route could be correct. | | |
