| | I tell ya, it's been a weird night... | | So, at about 2:30 this morning, my security guard let me know that there were guests at the desk who wanted my help. I came out of the office, helped the guests, and noticed four college age "gentlemen" sitting in my lobby. One of them, call him Guy 1, was talking on his cell phone, and being, even to my rather relaxed sensiblities, profane. So, I called him over to the desk, explained to him that cursing college students were exactly the "je ne sais quois" we were looking for, and would he cease and desist. He said yes... but his friend, Guy 2, got upset with me for asking him. He kept telling me, and I quote, that I "don't have to have an attitude about it." Honestly, up until Guy 2's timely intervention, I don't think I *did* have a snotty or derogatory attitude... but Guy 2 managed to save the day by pissy me off. I explained to Guy 2 that if he had a problem with me asking his friend to behave in a civilized fashion they were more welcome to go outside to wait for their ride. In the snow. Fortunately, I grabbed hold of myself and walked away before I escalated the problem to the point where I *was* going to toss them out. Guy 1 was busy telling Guy 2 that he needed to hush himself, Guy 2 kept insisting that I "didn't have to have an attitude about it".
The thing is though... it's one of those phrases that gets on my nerves. It's a meaningless sentence. If you're awake, you have an attitude. Period. There is no way that one can converse with another person, and not have an attitude about it, one way or the other. Except for maybe Al Gore. It wouldn't have gotten on my nerves so much if he had said I had a bad attitude, or that he didn't like my attitude, or even if he had told me that he thought I was being rude by asking his friend not to curse in my lobby.
It's the picky little things that get me. It's why I stay in accounting.
So, rather than abuse the poor addled (read: drunk) college student (ok, so the drunk bit was redundant) by explaining to him why his statement was nonsensical, I've been abusing my coworkers all night by telling them that they don't have to have an attitude about whatever it is that they happen to be doing when I see them. (It's always a good idea to keep pushing that "eris is insane" concept, it makes them more afraid of me.)

See, now that's a page out of my operations manual.
It's nice to find an attitudinally kindred spirit.

| | Re: I tell ya, it's been a weird night... | | I have been assured by my 26-year-old assistant that whack is au currant once more.
I had to do a vocabulary check with him for copy geared to late teens and 20-somethings.
Note: the word whack does not appear in the copy. It was the attitude given to me over the word partying. Apparently not only is that passe, it's also whack.

| | Re: I tell ya, it's been a weird night... | | SHAMEFUL COLLEGE STUDENT SECRET: My son, who was a student at your adjoining college (about 10 years ago) used to attend a lot of weddings at your place. He and his roommate would get hungry, put on a shirt and tie and crash. It amazed me how often they got away with it. Since both my son and his roommate were really quiet guys (presumably even when drunk) they probably melted into the crowds.
