| | If you paused for one minute in your day and listened, what would you hear? If you'd done the same thing, in the same place, last year would it have sounded much different?
I heard a story about people who took snapshots of sound for historical purposes. About once a year they would goto to various locations and set the taperecorder going for one minute. It was quite interesting to listen to the Then and Now minutes. Just through listening one could learn what changes have happened to the locations.

| | I hear the whirr of the fan above my head. That's it. And last year I'd have heard the exact same thing. When my husband visited my office a while back he told me it would drive him nuts. I told him that it drives EVERYBODY in the office nuts if the fan goes off for a few minutes. It's just too quiet without it...

| | I'm hearing Madonna's "Like a Prayer" on the radio, birds tweeting outside, and Drunken Girlfriend moving furniture as she continues her exodus to parts unknown
Last year I'd have heard Madonna's "Like a Prayer" on the radio, birds tweeting outside, and the previous tenants fighting, with Drunken Boyfriend punctuating his argument with putting his fist through the walls of their apartment.

| | I hear a fan, the sound of the person in the next office shuffling paper on her desk, a muted phone ringing down the hall and the tapping on my keyboard. It's pretty darn quiet.
Last year wouldn't have been too much different, though I don't think I had my small fan on quite so early in the year.

| | At night, it's the coyotes howling and the owl hooting. (Last night the coyotes howled so much it was like some bad western movie).
Daytime, lots of birds and the pool waterfall. |

| | Right this second, I hear the clock ticking. Nothing else. Pure bliss.
Last year, if I had been awake at the same time, it probably would have been the same, except maybe hubby would have been snoring.

| | Right now: computer fan, occasional birds, el going by, Ben yelling.
Last year -- ditto.
Sometimes, even in the city, it gets absolutely silent -- usually for no longer than a couple of minutes, but it's really amazing.
I've done this in North Carolina, too, especially at night -- it's really sort of astonishing how noisy the country is at night in the summer. Frogs and crickets, mostly.
