| | Coke C2/Pepsi Edge - what do y'all think? | | I haven't tried either of them yet, but I just got this email from hubby: Quote:
Finally, a cola that tastes worse than Chek Diet Cola.
I was given a can of Coke's C2 to try. Lucky for me, because even half price
would have been too much.
| The Check cola in reference is Winn Dixie's store brand of cola - the rest of their store brand colas taste fine, but both the regular and the diet versions of Coke/Pepsi taste horrible for some reason. This C2 stuff must be really bad for DH to say that the Coke tastes worse than Chek brand!

| | Re: Coke C2/Pepsi Edge - what do y'all think? | | I haven't tried it. If they pass it out in the grocery store while I'm shopping I'll probably give it a try, but I don't think I'll buy it.
This is the one that has half the sugar and half the calories, right?
I just feel as if I have enough choices. Regular, caffeine-free regular, vanilla regular, lemon regular, lime regular, diet, caffeine-free diet, vanilla diet, lemon diet, lime diet (is there cherry, too?) |

| | Re: Coke C2/Pepsi Edge - what do y'all think? | | I have tried the Coke version (I have it here next to me at the moment, even), and it tastes enough like the regular stuff to pass my test. 'Course, I'm also sold on Diet Vanilla Coke at the moment, and I never liked any diet stuff before that.

| | Re: Coke C2/Pepsi Edge - what do y'all think? | | I like C2. Tastes quite enough like Coke that I will drink it in plcae of Coke every chance I get. And I love Coke (though I really limit my intake).
I really dislike the diet sodas, so I guess I'm in the target market, even though I'm not counting carbs per se. I do try to prevent excessive sugar, fat and calorie intake.

| | Re: Coke C2/Pepsi Edge - what do y'all think? | | Hmph. I will try it if somebody gives it to me for free, but I don't agree with the whole "drink this soda, it's healthier" movement. Seriously--soda isn't healthy however you slice it. It's kinda like buying a chicken meal at McDonalds because chicken is "healthier" but still getting the fries to my mind...
One benefit outweighs the multiple problems with the product.
Make sense?
Personally, I don't "believe in" dieting anyway--rather, just sensible eating and exercise. Plus, I don't as a rule drink soda (or pop as most of the folks in my geographical area insist on calling in) because it is bad for my urinary tract not to mention teeth and waist line amongst other things. Not to say I don't occasionally if the mood strikes me but by and large I'm a water girl...
Boy am I in a rambling mood...

| | Re: Coke C2/Pepsi Edge - what do y'all think? | | I don't like the idea some people seem to get (and the soda manufacturers certainly encourage) that one soda is more "healthy" than another.
If you consider soda a vice, but you enjoy drinking it, than replacing a sugar soda with a non-sugar soda does have a positive impact on your waistline, all other htings being equal. And replacing a sugar soda with a half-sugar soda will have a similar effect, all other things being equal. The problem comes when people think one thing is going to make them healthy, or they overcompensate for the lack of sugar soda by increasing their intake elsewhere (or drinking 3x the half-sugar beverage).
There was an interesting study about this with smoking (peripherally related, but interesting). Some cigarettes with lower tar and nicotine use air vents on the sides to reduce the concentration of the smoke. In tests, the smoke was measured using a machine that draws on the cigarette. But in actual use, it was found that when addicts, er, I mean smokers used the product, they covered the holes with their fingers, and also took longer, deeper draws. They unconsciously compensated so that they got a fuller dose of the drug.
I think the same thing happens with "diet" foods, though I haven't seen explicit studies on it. Of course, we have more "diet" foods every year, and the national obesity rate in the US is soaring.
If you're smart about what you eat, soda can have a minimal impact. Lower-sugar soda can make that impact even less. If you're not smart about what you eat (and your activity level) then no soda or diet product is going to help you. That's what it comes down to.

| | Re: Coke C2/Pepsi Edge - what do y'all think? | | My new favorite soda is DietRite by the RC folks. I used to hate it, but they've started sweetening with Splenda which tastes MUCH more l like sugar to me than any of the other artificial sweeteners. It comes in flavors other than cola which I haven't tried yet, but plan to soon.

| | Re: Coke C2/Pepsi Edge - what do y'all think? | | I like it OK, I just finished a can.
The problem is that the C2 comes in 18-packs. So if I drink all the cans, it's like drinking 9 regular Cokes. Probably not a good thing, especially as I usually drink diet drinks or iced tea anyway.
The real value of it, IMHO, is that if I'm stopping by to get some junk food while I'm on the road, I'm much more likely to get a C2 than a regular Coke, and that's all to the good. But I have no intention of buying it on a regular basis.

I've been wondering why no one seems to be using Splenda in diet sodas. I'll have to try the DietRite. | | |
