| | Well-- the boy child got himself asked to 2 proms, and of course there is still his own, so that makes 3. One is next weekend. It is a Junior prom, so no tux, but the others require a tux. First one for him. Today he and the "guys" are going shopping, and I think tonight or Saturday he and his dad are going out. He and I get to go order the flowers!!!!
He is excited--the Junior prom is a girl in one of his classes, and the Senior prom is a girl who went to elementary school with him, but went to a different high school. He wound up asking her to his prom too. We are excited for him, since we really liked this girl a lot!! We think he likes her too, but because he has known her for so long won't admit it!

| | It might be more economical for you to buy him a tux. Sounds like he is very much in demand as a prom escort
Tuxedo stores often sell off tuxes that have been rented a few times (people who've worked in restaurants or catering places while they're in college are usually told to get their uniforms at tuxedo rental stores.)
Buying a tux from a tuxedo rental store would probably less expensive than renting one three times. |

| | I bought a brand new tux for my son for $79 at a warehouse store. A gorgeous Italian number (the tux, not my son).
Add about $13 for the shirt and another $20 or so for accessories and he was quite dashing with minimal investment.
He wore it twice. We're already ahead of the game over the cost of renting.
I imagine that similar deals can be gotten in your area.

| | Not Men's Warehouse.
A warehouse store specializes in manufacturers overstocks and closeouts. Think TJ Maxx but without the good lighting and any product merchandising.
I would imagine that it's not unique to NY Metro. Although I have to say there are far fewer of them than there was a number of years

| | I don't know of anything like that around here. I wonder if there might be one in the city. I am going to do some searching--I think I'll check the phone book. He has done some online searching for what he would like to wear--but no pricing. Why do I think this is going to cost more than the girl-child's prom gown???

| | If there's not a warehouse near you, it would be worth the cost of a trip to NYC to shop. Not only can he wear the tux to both proms, but I bet he can find a use for it when he gets to college. We didn't have any REQUIRED formal dress parties, but we did have assorted events where formal wear would have been appropriate.
My favorite was our good tastes/bad taste parties. One was supposed to dress in good taste for the good taste parties. I wore my little-girl style dressy dress and my Mary Janes, other people were much more formally dressed. My date went in his tennis attire. For the bad taste party, I wore the same dress, but looked like I'd gotten into mom's makeup. One party-goer dressed as our Catholic chaplain and wore his Phi Beta Kappa key. He's a Jesuit now.

| | I was going to say buy, too. Hubby had several events he needed to wear a tux to. We found that buying it paid for itself by the time we would have paid for two rentals... by the third event, we were happy as little clams.
I want to say that we paid $150 for his tux right at a rental place, and that included his tux, shirt, accessories (tie, cufflinks, etc.) AND the alterations. Even that is fairly reasonable, but I also know people who have gotten them on eBay. |
