How do we expect kids to learn math skills when they don't ever use them?

Monopoly is trashing the cash for a new mock Visa debit card.

I love this game to teach counting skills, as well as finances and simple things like making change.

Something weird happened with my last post, but anyway, Parker Brothers just eliminated a whole lot of learning that had been done with their game. Bad move.

If you want to complain to Hasbro, who markets Parker Games, help yourself. (You can also order replacement game parts, and find game instructions--who knew?)

I think we'll keep our old version.

Re How do we expect kids to learn math skills when they don't ever use them?

Kids could stand to learn a thing or two about credit cards.

They should have the option to use cash or credit, and then have to pay the bill after a few turns, with interest.

Actually, there's probably an idea in there somewhere for a game that teaches you not to max out your credit card. Sorely needed. (I don't think they've done this to Monopoly, though)

Re How do we expect kids to learn math skills when they don't ever use them?

we have a game called Mall Madness-with a visa for every player, you shop for specific items, hit the sales, the ATM and when you've purchased everything the game tells you to head for an exit... it's fun, but it's not monopoly.

I'll stick to the original version thank you

Do they have an option to go into Chapter 11 or whatever it is?

Re How do we expect kids to learn math skills when they don't ever use them?

DH made the same point as DH - yeah, losing the necessary cash-in-hand math sucks, but since the world is going plastic, it can teach you how to budget and work with this "imaginary" money that lives on your card.

Eh, I still prefer the cash version.

Re How do we expect kids to learn math skills when they don't ever use them?

I like JP's idea of having to pay the bill (with interest) after a few turns. That wouldn't be a bad thing. Of course, the old Monopoly allowed players to mortgage their properties if they didn't have enough money.

I do think that learning how to use credit cards is a good thing. But, before you can properly use credit cards, learning to budget and count and make change should be learned. If you can't budget cash, you don't have a prayer with a credit card.

I would rather see beginner easy childrens monopoly with cash, but wouldn't mind a tween version with debit/credit.

Re How do we expect kids to learn math skills when they don't ever use them?

As an adult, I always considered Monopoly money as a dandy math manipulative. There was just something about counting it out, adding it up, etc. that seemed to work well. Numbers on paper, or on a screen, not so much.
