| | Please send good karma to Minneapolis | | I just found out that my brother is in surgery, getting a much-needed heart transplant. If all goes well, he'll be in surgery for another hour or so, then heavily sedated until at least tomorrow morning. I probably won't be able to visit until 24-48 hours from now. |

| | Re Please send good karma to Minneapolis | | Wow -- did you say heart TRANSPLANT? I guess I must have been scanning quickly, because I was thinking "bypass" the first time I saw this thread. Well, good luck to him, and I hope everything works out great. |

| | Re Please send good karma to Minneapolis | | Surgery went okay. He's in the ICU now. Gotta coordinate with my parents, the staff there, etc. but will probably go visit tomorrow (late in the day?) when he's back to consciousness.
My mom contracted rubella while she was pregnant with him and he has known since his twenties that he didn't have the world's greatest heart. He went into cardiac arrest 15 years ago and was brought back from the edge of death three times in one night. Not long after that he was one of the early test cases for a device that later became the type of pacemaker/defibrilator combo that Cheney had implanted a few years back (the prototype my brother had did not function correctly and was removed not long after it was put in). Has been on and off a transplant waiting list (long story), recently got back on and luckily a suitable organ became available. |

| | Re Please send good karma to Minneapolis | | I just spoke with an ICU nurse. They took out the breathing tube this morning and he's sitting up in a chair.
Maybe he'll run a marathon this afternoon. |
