| | Happy Cesar Chavez Day! | | My friends in CA got the day off. I was jealous, so today I brought in Mardi Gras beads for a festive Cesar Chavez Day! Quote: | César Estrada Chávez (March 31, 1927 – April 23, 1993) was a Mexican American farm worker, labor leader, and civil rights activist who co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers. His work led to numerous improvements for union workers. He is considered a hero for farm laborers. He is hailed as one of the greatest American civil rights leaders alongside of Martin Luther King, Jr.. His birthday on March 31 has subsequently become a holiday in four U.S. states, and many parks, cultural centers, libraries, schools, and streets have been named in his honor in several cities across the United States.

| | Re Happy Cesar Chavez Day! | | Oh dear - I shouldn't laugh, but I had grapes for lunch today. Whole Foods had a huge display of grapes with a serape draped over the basket of them.
And yes, he really was a great guy, IMO. |

| | Re Happy Cesar Chavez Day! | | In July you can celebrate Pioneer Day with me. I get that day off. I'll be at the parade in the morning but the afternoons are always open before the rodeo.
(Okay, the truth is I don't really go to the rodeo.)
What odd holidays do you celebrate that are as obscure as Cesar Chavez day and Pioneer day? I'm thinking if a person worked it right most of the year could be spent in celebration!

| | Re Happy Cesar Chavez Day! | | Never heard of Pioneer day! It's a state holiday?
I work with a lot of people from S. America. Yesterday they heard Chavez and went nuts. I had to explain that it wasn't bad Venezulan Chavez - it was Cesar - the good Mexican Chavez! |

| | Re Happy Cesar Chavez Day! | | Obscure Holiday: Brooklyn/Queens Day in NYC. Schools close, parades, etc. For some reason, there's no Bronx Day or Staten Island Day or Manhattan Day - or if there are, I never heard of them. And it seems like just about every weekend there's a parade somewhere in NYC for some little-known holiday or celebrating some ethnic group (like the West Indian Day Parade).
