Good thoughts and prayers

Volunteer Fire Department just stopped by. A boy a few years younger than Jeremy from Underwood is missing...evidently this morning he told someone he was going to walk to a friend's house here...about 7 miles away. I'm hanging out hoping they either put out word that he's been found or that they are organizing a search.

I'm just panicked, I can't imagine what his parents (who I know) are going through right now.

I'm sitting here doing my taxes and watching the road. State Patrol drove by about an hour ago, but I have seen nor heard anything else.

I'm just sick about this. I don't know if I should call someone to see if there is anything I can do or not...and who to call if I did. I asked the VFD to stop back or call if they are organizing a search, but nothing yet.

I'm not sure if I would call the parents because any phone ringing without new info would be cruel, but maybe if you know a local family member or really close friend you can call and let them know that you're there to help in any way you can. If he doesn't show up soon they may want to distribute flyers or start a search. I can't even imagine how frightened they all must be. Has Jer asked about this?

Wormie, Jer was here when the VFD stopped by. He's not upset at this point, he doesn't really know the boy.

I called one of the EMT that had stopped by and she's not home. That makes me even more worried. It's a decent day (a little windy and chilly, but not bad) but it's going to get dark and cold in a few hours.

It was an April Fools joke on his sister, who is in California. He's safe and sound with his mom.

Oh and in the process of finally figuring out what's going on, I found out about two divorces. How's that for an afternoon of gossip....

I don't think the neighbors who were out driving around looking for him, the sherriff's deputy and the Omaha World Herald carrier who were asked to keep an eye out for him were amused either.

Word is that the mom was in on it, but had no idea that it would snowball like it did.

I really would love for you to print out this thread and send it to the mother. The world is small today, and people care about kids. She scared the other families in your community, she worried a lot of strangers, she wasted community resources that had better things to do than look for a not-lost child, and she taught her kid a really horrible lesson.

From what I have heard, the mother is pretty ashamed of the joke. She really used poor judgment, but didn't think that her daughter (vacationing in CA) would call 911. I've heard (through the grapevine) that she's said that she's going to have to move because she's going to be the most hated person in Underwood. I don't know that this will result in any kind of charges or not...remember, you are talking about a very small community, and while that doesn't make it any lesser of an offense, the situation is probably more forgiveable.

And if nothing else, the response from the community to a potentially horrific event was pretty overwhelming. I didn't realize how many people pulled together in almost no time to go out and look for this kid.

Yes, it's infuriating on one hand. But on the other it does show how strong we are, and we are all just saying "thank God he was not lost or abducted".

the daugher called 911? Well, good for the daughter, and while I think the mother acted very foolishly, I now have a tinge of sympathy for her. An apology goes a long way. She made a horrible horrible mistake, but I think that a community that moved so fast to help will also move to accept a heart-felt apology.
