| | The five-second rule: It just may be true Quote: |
The results: No bacteria were found on any food left on the floor for up to half a minute. Apple slices and Skittles both got germy after a minute (although one Skittle took five minutes).
| But there was a MythBusters episode about it, and they came to the conclusion that food did pick up bacteria after only 5 seconds (and possibly less, I can't remember exactly). Quote: Episode 39: Chinese Invasion Alarm
The MythBusters take a pot shot at an ancient Chinese text that alludes to a subterranean sonar system that could apparently detect and intercept an invasion from below. And watch Adam and Jamie test out a myth that millions of hungry Americans invoke every day — if it's been on the floor for less than five seconds, is it really safe to eat? premiere: Oct. 19, 2005 | What are you personal rules?

| | I think the research is flawed; nowhere did it take into account the "Kiss to God" corollary of the five-second rule, which states that any germs that DID make it on to food that fell on the floor are eliminated or rendered powerless by quickly saying "Kiss to God" and raising the fallen piece of food first to one's lips, then skyward for divine blessing.

| | Never heard that one, MJ.
There ARE places that I wouldn't even consider 1 second, let alone 5, or even a Kiss to God blessing. Like the floors of our office building. I think they get vacuumed about once a decade.

| | I base it most strictly on the desirability of the food dropped.
Never heard of Kiss to God.

| | The students did their test in a relatively quiet corner of the cafeteria. I bet that cafeteria is cleaner than most.
I work in a hospital. NO WAY am I eating anything that's been on the floor.
I have a dog. I'm not fast enough to eat anything that lands on MY floor. Five second rule? You're kidding, right?

| | They found that the amount of bacteria that was picked up depended on the moisture of food, the surface geometry of food, and the location that it was dropped on, but there was no correlation to the amount of time it was dropped.
