Thinking about a temporary henna tattoo?

You'd better read this first:

Urban Legends Reference Pages: Henna Tattoo Scarring

Quote:
Black henna is not always safe to use. Permanent scarring can result from its application, and a tattoo meant to be worn for a few days can become a lifelong mark. Also, someone who has had a bad reaction to black henna may afterwards become extra-sensitive to PPD and similar chemicals, including some antibiotics and local anesthetics. Future reactions will likely be more severe.

Even when there isn't an immediate bad reaction to a tattoo worked in black henna, just having had that form of skin art can set up the wearer for misery in the future. Thanks to the concentration of PPD in the formulation used to execute skin designs (up to 15.7%), the temporary tattoo sensitizes its wearer to that chemical. More than two-thirds of hair dyes currently contain PPD or related chemicals, which means the former tattoo wearer may well experience a delayed hypersensitivity reaction when she decides years later to change her hair color. Said reaction can range anywhere from redness and irritation around the hairline and scalp to complete swelling of the face and a rash all over the body.

Re Thinking about a temporary henna tattoo?

Hmmm...I've gotten quite a few henna tatoos, but I don't know that it's been with "black henna." The stuff I've always used has been green, staining red/brown, and it doesn't look like that should be an issue. Definitely something I'll keep in mind the next time I have an opportunity!

Actually, truth be told, I wouldn't mind a henna tattoo, as long as it was covered up and something for only a Certain Somebody's eyes. DH laughs at me, but I like the stick-on temp tattoos.

Re Thinking about a temporary henna tattoo?

I really like getting the henna tatoos, and like I said, I've gotten quite a few. I usually get them on my wrist or hand, so not much I can do to cover them up. Last year I got my entire palm done, and since it was the inside of my hand, it's wasn't too obvious. I have a kit to do it myself, but haven't gotten around to mixing up the paste. It's been over a year since I bought it, so I'm not sure it's even good anymore, I'll have to take a look at the package. I was actually just thinking about this yesterday because Nick and I were talking about the county fair, which is where I got my palm done last year.

Re Thinking about a temporary henna tattoo?

Bree's right. It's only the black henna that's dangerous. The other kinds are safe.

Re Thinking about a temporary henna tattoo?

I have one real tattoo and plan on at least two more, I've found one picture I want done, I'm still searching for the others-I just have to find the right ones.

Henna tattoos are cute and fun, but I'd rather have the real thing

I'm still holding out for a flying pig--just don't know where I would want it. You know, as in "That will happen when pigs fly....".
