| | Re ..and a pickup truck... | | Yep, covered just like that. It happens automatically. You then can let your agent know the details later.

| | Re ..and a pickup truck... | | ?! Never in my lifetime. Maybe it's a NYS thing, but to drive the car away you have to have an insurance card with that car's VIN on it and a new registration. No automatics, no let-the-agent-know-later stuff.

| | Re ..and a pickup truck... | | So, you have to change insurance info before you can even buy the new car? What a pain! I love being able to drive the new car home and waiting for the new insurance cards to arrive in the mail. Here, you have to have insurance on a car, but the policy works from the old to the new one for something like 30 days. |

| | Re ..and a pickup truck... | | Wow, what a pain! Here you call your agent, let them know you are buying a car you will be adding to the policy, then you go in at some point or just call to give vin # |

| | Re ..and a pickup truck... | | In NYS you can buy the car, but can't drive it off the lot until it's registered, plated and insured. To register it, you need a proof of insurance card with the new car's VIN on it.
If you buy from a private owner, the owner takes the plates and registration sticker off the car when he/she signs over the title, unless he/she is a very kind person and trusts the new owner not to crash the car or get tickets on it with the old owner's plates/registration on it. The old owner cancels the insurance at the same time. New owner cannot legally drive this vehicle until the car is registered and has plates, which requires proof of insurance with the new car's VIN on it.
It's meant to ensure that unsuspecting drivers on the road aren't hit by an uninsured driver, but it doesn't totally prevent that from happening - e.g., you can register the car and let your insurance lapse. Your registration is cancelled as soon as your insurance is, but many folks don't take their cars off the road and turn in their plates like they're required to do.

| | Re ..and a pickup truck... | | We just call our agent whenever. And the plates stick with the owner...you have 30 days to plate and register it. So if you change your mind, you are covered under your old policy for a time. I've called in cars weeks after we've bought them because Dan changes vehicles so many times that it's just like a revolving door of pickups.

Proof of insurance is necessary. | | | |
