My mom started doing this when she was recovering from her broken hip a few years ago, before it became popular. She "invented " it herself, but it's one of those things that lots of people have all thought up.
I thought we were braiding plastic bags to make rugs.

Yes, my daughter was going to make something from plastic bags for her friend's birthday (her friend was born on the fourth of July, so she'd better get moving! Instead, last night she sewed herself a shirt with material depicting rocket ships and outer space (for the fourth of July....) If she has some extra fabric, maybe she could make one for her friend, too...)

a lot of people do this and I've seen some really beautiful bags!
It's supposed to be harder to crochet than yarn. and some of the new bags are designed to be biodegradable in the sun - not good for beach bags!
