| | I saw bits and pieces of the concert.
But my main question was unanswered:
Tipper Gore first became famous for her crusade against objectionable music: Quote: |
In 1985, she co-founded the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) with Susan Baker, wife of then United States Secretary of the Treasury James Baker, because Tipper heard her then 11-year-old daughter playing "Darling Nikki" by Prince. This group was criticized by musicians including Ice-T, Jello Biafra of the Dead Kenndeys, Bruce Springsteen, Dee Snider of Twisted Sister and Frank Zappa. [5] Gore responded to the criticism by claiming, "she wasn't out to censor the objectionable material. 'I'm a strong believer in the First Amendment,' she says. Yet she had her husband introduce legislation that would have banned stores from selling any music with a warning label to anyone younger than 18.

Now, with gigantic megaconcerts in 13 major cities worldwide, I am certain that at least some of the bands and performers would have made her most wanted list (particularly since it's now 22 years later, and what would have been an objectionable band or performer in 1985 would seem very tame today.)
So is Tipper prioritizing? Is it OK to use four letter words if you promise to use compact fluorescent bulbs? What's up, Tipper? |

| | I'm so happy that I'm not the only one who remembers Tipper's past. I <3 EA!
If lyrics like "we're not gonna take it" got her panties in a bunch, I wonder why she's ok with "we don't need no education?" |

| | Yes - lets not discuss saving the environment when we can talk about what a hypocrite Tipper is. Was she even at the concert? |

| | I apologize for the snarky tone above. I'm in a bad mood.
The thing is that Tipper didn't want to put bands out of business, she didn't want to censor what they could say, she just wanted to limit access to kids. We have ratings on movies to keep young kids from getting in without their parents approval - she wanted something similar for music. I don't see anything wrong with that. I wouldn't want my 10 year old singing "Me so Horny" or "I want to F&ck you like an animal".
On a personal level Tipper may not like many of the artists that performed - so what. She has a right not to like it, she has a right not to want her kids to hear the songs, and she has what I think is a valid arguement for providing "ratings" to help parents keep objectionable material from their kids.
I don't see what that has to do with Live Earth or the fact that her husband was involved with the concert. |

| | I still think it's a valid discussion, even if it should then move to the symposium.
There are a lot of ethical quandries about Live Earth. Having Tipper as a wife is one of them. a) the ratings system sucks about as much as the MPAA's. Did you know that Justin Timberlake's latest album is ALL listed as "parental advisory?" And you can pay an extra $2 to get a cleaned up one? Tipper's campaign also led to the Wal-Mart censoring policies and a whole other mess. I don't think it's anyone's job to instruct me on what I should be doing as a parent. b) any idea how many of those acts were "parental advisory" types of acts? Genesis got dinged for one of their songs which contains the F word, and yet Akon performed. c) it's a concert to raise awareness about environmental issues and yet a good portion of the artists who performed flew to a country that isn't home via private jets, own humongous SUVs, and invest in companies that are some of the worst ecological damaging ones. Madonna's "Ray of Light Foundation" was singled out as one of the prime examples, with several major investments in big oil and the like.
I'm the biggest hippie out there, and I guess it makes me happy if people at least took away something new that they can do, but it seemed to be a sort of weird way to do it. |

| | With how many private aerial, limousine, private helicopters etc etc have gone to the concert the star of music?
How many several gases and lighting systems have used for the special effects?
How much the concerts (in special mode rock) attract people if not is a world-wide event? |

| | I saw Tipper at the US concert, snapping photographs while Al looked on.
When I saw Live Earth, it was in the middle of a Saturday afternoon--not after 10 p.m. Children of all ages could view the concerts.
I think that the Live Earth concerts were a wonderful thing and that the organizers and performers should be commended. But I think Tipper made a choice between her moral crusade and her husband's environmental cause during the Live Earth concerts, and that if she really believed in her crusade with all her heart she would have gotten Al to negotiate so that the concerts would only be broadcast after small children were asleep.....
Or perhaps had warnings flashed on the screen for certain acts....
And I'm just surprised that she didn't.
I did read that all of the concert venues took steps to make their venues more environmentally friendly. Quote: |
Live Earth organisers attempted an array of environmentally-friendly measures, including using a green energy supplier, food boxes made from biodegradable reed and sugar-cane pulp, and a pledge to recycle or compost almost all waste material.

I also read that the audience was urged to carpool, many venues changed their lighting systems to CFL's, and no energy sources involving burning coal were used.
Some of these changes were permanent. | | |
