| | I got an email from "Paypal" asking me to update my account by July 13. I DO NOT have a paypal account, never have.
I did forward the email to paypal -- to their spoof department. But I have to laugh, I don't even have an account to update!!!

| | I get stuff like that all the time, not just PayPal phishes at emails I don't use PP at, but also banks and credit cards I've never even heard of, much less use!

| | I get phished so often I can't keep track any more - at least a couple times a day, and the emails usually mention "my" accounts at financial institutions I've barely heard of. If it's someone I already have an account with, I'll send the email to their spoof department, but I don't bother with the Paypal or eBay ones any more.

| | P.S. - I'm glad you caught it and didn't click on it even if you don't have a PayPal account!

| | The ones I still love are the Nigerians. We recently posted a bunch of horse ads and they love to harvest those email addresses. Got a response on an ad, and we were all excited until we got the second reply, which was a cut and paste job referring to shipping the guy some parrots. for which we'd gladly float him $500 until he received the parrots and could pay us for both the float as well as the cost of the parrots.
It was pretty hilarious, actually.

| | Erik it was my gmail account too!
This was my first time. I know my husband gets them all the time. My friend just finished telling me about it, from her yahoo account. She didn't know what it was, clicked typed some info, but couldn't remember her password. They still had to change and close all their accounts because she did remember her SS#. Her husband was having a meltdown.

| | I get it all the time for paypal too. I don't know if I am erasing real emails from paypal now. I probably am sometimes. I won't even open them.
I get phished from having a resume online at one point. It's been off for months and months now. Doesn't stop them from the emails that say:
Dear Margaret , [that extra space is a dead give away]
We recently viewed your resume online [that hasn't been online for a long time...] and we think you would be qualified as a _________ [position I'm not qualified for, like casting agent, or head of human resources] at ________.com.
When I was leaving my job, and I was actively searching for a new job, I would get so excited for these (some of them I actually am qualified for...) and I googled the companies that they were supposedly representing. Again and again I read about people who submitted all their personal info (including SSN) so they could be "considered" for the bogus positions.
Apparently once your resume has been on one of these boards, these emails won't stop coming. It's very frustrating for me, and I can see someone like an elderly person or a desperate for work person falling for it. I'm just paranoid and research any company before I even consider applying to them... but that's just me. |
