| | Anybody need some extra? I bought a dish set last weekend at an antique store for the plates, but had to take the mugs and bowls too. The mugs are pale yellow outside with white inside. I think the bowls are white with a pale yellow band around the top. I can post pics if anybody's interested. I think I hav a blue set too. I can't really use them for my mosaic stuff, and I think Nick is going to get sick of all the extra dishes I'm gathering.

| | Can you break them and use them in mosaic - with the cup's acting as little holders for plants or keys or something? |

| | That's what I'm keeping the rest of the dishes for, doing mosaic stuff. But cups and bowls are hard to work with. The cups I can maybe use because they're yellow, but I don't use plain white much. I'll probably keep them around, who knows when I might need them for something, but I just thought I'd check. Unfortunately, every time I find new plates I like, lately they're always in full sets. At garage sales it's no big deal, I just pick out the plates I really like. But at antique stores or auctions, I feel kind of weird turning down half the set. I'm always afraid they won't want to sell them to me if they know I'm just going to be breaking it! I always want to tell them not to bother wrapping things up either, I really don't care if it breaks in my trunk!

| | Oy, every time I read your posts about buying pottery to break it, I cringe! I'd ebay what you don't want. Who knows, someone's probably got the plates and is dying for the cups and bowls.

| | Most of what I buy to break is cheap (price-wise, at least) stuff at garage sales where they have mix and match random stuff. Some of my other stuff, meh, I don't know what it's worth to someone other than me. To me though, I see mosaic!
I'll think about the eBay option, I actually hadn't thought about that.

| | This thread has pictures of the table I've made and a plate before it was grouted. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of the plate after it was grouted. I'm working on another similar table for a friend of mine, as well as a few other little projects.
So far it's nothing much, but I've gotten some really neat dishes lately that I can't wait to work with. Plus I finally got my sander, so I'm able to actually work on stuff. I actually sand every piece after it's broken so that a person can run their hands over the top and not get cut by the broken pieces. It's the most time-consuming part of the whole process, but pretty necessary, as far as I'm concerned.

| | You should, it's great stuff!
I'm really excited about the table I'm making for a friend now. I'm almost finished sanding all the pieces, just a couple handfulls of very small pieces left to do. I finally gave up for the night though because my back is killing me from bending over the sander - I need to get a decent height stool. Hopefully when Nick gets home tomorrow he can help me cut the tabletops (I'm still slightly afraid of the circular saw), and then I'll be able to start gluing. I may wait to sand the really little pieces until I actually need them, just incase I don't for this project. They'll eventually need to be sanded to go in another box, but I just can't handle it right now.

| | Check Replacements too... people are always looking for things for old sets, even if it's just for sentimental reasons, like it was granny's old set of dishes. |

| | I always wonder what places like that do with plates/tiles/etc that break. I've thought about going to Home Depot and asking them what they do with any broken tiles, but just haven't remembered when I'm there. They've got some really cool tiles I would love to use, but they're way too expensive to just be buying them to break and use here and there.

| | This reminds me of Buffalo Pottery. Way back in the day, Buffalo Pottery manufactured dishes and had very exacting standards. If they found a flaw in the glazing, design, or other aspect of a dish, they would toss the dish in a bin. When the bin was full, they would dump the bin in their back yard area and guys with sledgehammers would crush the pottery. When the employees left, people in the area would go bck there and look for unbroken pieces to take home. Old Buffalo Pottery is valuable, but old Buffalo Pottery with a flaw is even *more* valuable as a result. Go figger.

| | I like practically anything, but so far don't use much that's just plain white. Anything colored or with any type of pattern is great. Not clear glass, the adhesive shows through, and obviously not plastic. I sometimes pick up plates sets on clearance at Target/Walmart/etc just to have on hand. Most of the stuff I've gotten has been mix 'n' match from garage sales, but I've found a few good sets at antique stores or auctions.
Smashing the plates, etc is half the fun, I wouldn't mind that job!

| | That wouldn't help. Scarcity of the pottery is making it prohibitively expensive for me to rebuild my grandmother's set of china Grandma's pattern

| | I see. Well, I don't have anything in that pattern and don't think I've ever seen it before. That's the sort of pattern I think is perfect, but I'd never use because it's too expensive for my purposes. I'm guessing | |
