| | I just cleaned out all my email from last year, and responses. I got rid of all the stuff I have to keep for a year. My desktop looks empty.

| | Teachers go back for 2 days of inservice (sometimes it's more) this year the week before Labor Day and the kids start the day after Labor Day. Michigan passed the after Labor Day law last year. We get out around the 15th of June. |

| | Why does school start so early now? Here in Nova Scotia, Canada, school still starts after the first week of Septemeber.

| | I have no idea why it starts so early down here. OPS starts up next week. AUGUST 13. They usually end up having early outs the first several weeks because of heat, so it makes no sense whatsoever.
I do like having the kids out before Memorial Day, because it's become a traditional vacation week for us, but it just seems sooo early!!! I remember when I was a kid, it was always the Monday after Labor Day, and I was always bummed because I never got to celebrate my late-August birthday at school!

| | Ostensibly, the early start to the year helps out with mid-year breaks and tests. Before, kids were getting out for Christmas and New Year, and having to study for mid-year exams all during that break. Now, they can get them out of the way before the break and actually enjoy their break.
Also, I'm pretty convinced that some folks are working behind the scenes to try and ease in year-round schooling. Just jumping into it never seems to work, so I think they're trying to work their way into it by increments.
