Body Worlds

Has anyone else seen one of these exhibitions? I have to admit, I was relieved when we couldn't get tickets last March back in Chicago, but when it came to Portland this summer, we went. It was fascinating. And a bit unnerving.

Yep. I saw it in NY. I thought it was absolutely amazing. The people who were with me might beg to differ. It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea.

Re Body Worlds

I wanted to see it when it came to Philadelphia a few years ago--that is until I realized that they are real human bodies. I don't know what has been done to them, but I didn't go. Part of me is happy that I wimped out, and part of me still wishes I would have gone.

I'm not sure I could do it. I've thought about it, but luckily it hasn't come anywhere near me, so I haven't had to make the actual decision.

I found just the posters rather unnerving. I think the concept is brilliant, and I can't imagine how the bodies are prepared, posed, etc. Certainly demonstrates how intricately made we are! But I don't want to see the exhibit.

We've talked about this guy before, at least twice:

I think I would want to see it if it came close enough for me to go, but I'm not sure.

I saw it and thought it was absolutely fascinating. Especially the section showing the diseased organs. If nothing else convinces you to stop smoking, seeing the smoker's lungs would. But the worst was the coal miner's lung. Basically it looked like charcoal. Muscles and tendons not as interesting.

Re Body Worlds

Wikipedia has a good, basic article on the process:

Plastination - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

It's not just used for this guy's shows, schools are using it for vet and human medical learning. The picture of the arteries with nothing else is really neat.

Re Body Worlds

Saw it in NYC, mad cool but tres $$$. Although there's a lot of controversy about how the bodies are acquired, I think what happens to our leftover shells isn't such a big deal so while the ethics of the situation suck, it didn't bother me enough not to go.

Re Body Worlds

Why on EARTH am I SPEAKING this week? I swear whatever I type comes to life. I should talk about having a million dollars drop on my lap.

Don't I get the mailer from the science museum TODAY and one of these starts 1-Sep? It's SIXTEEN DOLLARS a head (heh... no pun intended) on TOP of our membership. I can't see me shelling out $80 for an hour or two freaking out the kids... G and I will have to discuss. I'm SURE Beanie, with her love of all things dead will want to go.
