| | #1 just got a part-time job. At Petsmart!!! Yahoo! I wonder if he could get an employee discount on a bunny?
Seriously, though, he's thrilled. He had four rounds of interviews to get this job- he'll be in charge of the doggy daycare - and he really wanted it. He got hired today, he just called to tell me. Yay! |

| | Congrats on the job... but...
Well...
Speaking from experience, the super pet stores are NOT a good place for people who love animals to work.

| | I'd thought about that, Eris. I'm hoping really hard that he gets to stay in the doggy daycare, where the dogs are treated kindly. I'll not lay odds on his having this job a year if he has to do very much with the pet animals for sale. |

| | When you're young, you generally work in retail or food...
And even if it isn't perfect, I think it's better for #1 to be in a field he enjoys than in any old retail store.
For example, my daughter works in a fabric store, and there are some things she doesn't like--carrying around huge bolts of upholstery fabric that are bigger than she is, for example--but she is also picking up a lot of tips about sewing and quilting and embroidery...
I think your #1 will be a blessing to his 'customers.' |

Speaking from experience, the super pet stores are NOT a good place for people who love animals to work. | The Petsmart stores here have lots of fish and reptiles, no dogs or cats though. They allow the animal rescue/welfare organizations to leave pets there in hopes they'll be adopted, and host pet adoption days on weekends. |

| | Yep, and one of his duties is to assist on adoption fair days. Doggy daycare doesn't fill up as fast on weekends, so he gets to help the various dog rescue groups when they have their day. That's how we got Libby, btw - when Michigan Collie Rescue had a fair at a Petsmart, we went, adopted her and also got a really nice loot bag from the Petsmart folks.
As for the other animal treatment, I know that the big box pet stores around here vary a lot. There is a Petco I shop at because they really know a lot about hermit crabs and do everything correctly- their crabs hardly ever die from post-purchase shock. However, some of the other Petcos and Petsmarts keep their little crabbies in awful conditions, ad I learned the hard way not to buy crabs there. I assume the same would hold true for reptiles.
However, on a positive note, the stores which have bad crab conditions have, for the most part, been more than willing to listen to me go on and on about changes they could make to keep their crabs alive, and some have actually changed the crabitats. So, fingers crossed that if things are not so good for some animals, #1 could suggest changes occasionally. |

| | See, now, I think that would be a great job. When I have a little less on my plate, I plan to volunteer at the local shelter to walk dogs. Can't wait to hear the stories from #1, he'll be great at that job!!!!
And I didn't know PetSmart had doggie day care. There is one only a few blocks from my office...I would love to bring Rexy in once or twice a week and then go visit him on lunch!!! Dan would shake his head and roll his eyes, but what the hell, I'll check it out. I have a friend who is going through a very rough time with her doggie right now, and I'm feeling the need to give mine squishy hugs quite a bit.

Today's his first day. We're off to buy some nice khakis and dress shoes, since for some strange reason they won't let him wear his cowboy boots. |

| | Actually, it wasn't so much the people running the store that I worked at that were the issue for me (although they did pull some real winner moves). What got me was the customers.
But then, I'm an animal person. I just like critters. And people who say things near me along the lines of "Well, it doesn't really matter, I mean, it's just a fish, anyway" hurt me to my soul. Especially when I'm selling them the fish.
