No one is giving Maryland's football program enough credit yet. True, the Terrapins at 7-0 have big tests at Florida State next week and Clemson after, but they've already whomped Georgia Tech this season. That record includes a 5-0 mark in ACC games, an easier task this year than in others, but still, perfect in a major conference is, well, perfect.
They're ready to canonize coach Ralph Friedgen in College Park. His is a larger than life story that would make Horatio Alger seem to be a piker. Through dedication and hard work, Friedgen got his own program to run and he's got the Terps at #14 and bound to move up again this week, especially with Oregon getting upset and Washington just squeaking by Arizona.
How good is Maryland? Even against a weak Duke Blue Devils team, Maryland didn't punt until their final series. They cruised to a 59-17 victory, leaving most fans to simply wonder, How did they give up 17 points?
With Florida State anxious to move up and do coach Bobby proud, next week's game may be more exciting than most pro games.
