| | I finally got fed up with AT&T and took advantage of an offer from Earthlink for phone service with DSL at the price I was paying for AT&T and dial-up with Earthlink. Got the new modem, waited for The Day:
On the day my phone service was switched, I lost all Internet access -- couldn't get a stable connection on dial-up, and the new modem didn't work. And something fritzed both my browsers.
The first tech I talked to tried to sell me a virus protection package (I said, "Can we worry about that when I actually have Internet?") and then said I had to talk to my computer vendor. This was not typical -- the typical response was to ask me to hold for a moment and then go to lunch. I think they all studied customer service at Dell. (The one who started off by saying "So, you're having problems with your voice service?" wins some sort of prize. I was talking to him on my home phone.)
I finally found two techs in a row who knew what they were doing -- the first actually left notes in the file, the second actually read them.
Seventeen days later, I have DSL. I also have a bill that includes charges for service that I didn't have.
Next battle. |

| | UGH. Nothing is more frustrating than having Internet out, IMO. I especially like when I call customer service, push all the buttons to indicate "I can't get to the Internet," and the recording encourages me to look up my problem on their website.

| | Fortunately, the only one who told me to go to "wwwdot" was the lady from Microsoft, who otherwise was pretty cool. |

| | Actually, I'm sort of ambivalent about it. I love having DSL -- everything's so fast! And since I had to reinstall Windows, I have a real clean machine right now. (I haven't put in all my documents, and probably won't, especially the photo files -- the only ones I'm using are for the Web site, and they take up too much room.)
But I had two weeks where I got up in the morning and actually got things done! |
