Just got a fabulous surprise for my birthday--I'm getting a laptop! Cindy, Gary and Sandy, Michelle and DH are going in on it. Cindy, queen of the shoppers, is bound to find one really cheap. She should be a professional personal shopper, just sayin'.
And, my super-fast desktop computer is fixed! Yes, OMG, it works! Jeremy installed a new motherboard New Year's Eve, and Gary installed a videocard compatible with the motherboard just before we all went out to dinner last night. Happy birthday to me!

Better shop fast! And I spoke too soon. Apparently my cool computer in the basement now no longer can find the Internet. ??? Hope this is just a temporary glich, after all the many hours people have put in to assemble it and then fix it. It was so nice to have my keyboard at the right height, etc. etc. (I have a big old beat up former typing desk, the kind where the typewriter dropped down into a well, leaving a flat working surface. Yeah, we brought it in by covered wagon. Anyway, I had the legs sawed off years ago to the height I like.)

It's just a glitch. di you call the cable company? They'll tell you what it is, you know, and they're really nice about it.

Aaaand I'm online again! My computer had a new firewall that was so effective it made it impossible for the router to update the IP address, so no mail for me, or any internet. Gary fixed that all up, and new virus protection is being installed as we speak. Yay! I never thought I would become so reliant on having internet access.

Meanwhile, at church the secretary's been b!tching about her computer's speed for months. I sit down and go through the programs - she's got about 20 Free Internet Download games (each with its own little nugget of spyware) and about four other semi-legitimate programs set up to be instant-on, so they're always running in the background even if she's not using them. Plus no one bothered to tell me that when the Verizon guy came to set up DSL two years ago, they bought the $4.99/month Internet Security package. So I've had Norton running on the machine all this time. Of course once I found out there was something Norton was likely conflicting with (since Norton conflicts with, oh, everything), I turned it off and everything is MUCH faster. Now I'm waiting for the secretary to call me tomorrow to complain I took all her games and coupon-printing spyware software and everything off her WORK computer.

But at least for now it's zippy.

Good on you, MJ. I have to take a basic computer course now, so I can stop asking Gary questions that make him twitch. He doesn't want to hear any more phone calls beginning with: "I hate to bother you, but..." And Ben and Jay are out of town. So I should learn to make my own print on the desktop smaller and larger, etc. etc. If I had to cook meals knowing as much about cooking as I do about how my computer works, we would be eating take-out.
