| | The "S" word is coming! The "S" word is coming! | | It's about to SNOW here!!!! And it's a Saturday, so nobody has to go anywhere or do anything - we can play!
Although, I do feel really, really badly for our friend's son - 2:00 today is supposed to be his Eagle Scout Court of Honor celebration. Which will be right in the *middle* of the snowstorm. I don't think most people are going to try and get there. We probably won't, and it's literally right down the road from us.

Oh joy here. It's up to 12 degrees. We're going out with the realtor soon. I don't want to go out at all today - except that tomorrow will b even colder.

| | Re The "S" word is coming! The "S" word is coming! | | We got a bit of snow... for about an hour, one daughter got to sled. The other one was with her friend, who was celebrating her birthday, riding a hummerlimo.

| | Re The "S" word is coming! The "S" word is coming! | | Yeah... this town is weird. Hummers everywhere you look. And the big thing for parents to do for their kids on milestone moments is to rent a Hummer Limousine for four hours and tool around. It was the talk of the school day when it pulled up to pick up my daughter's friend. Only my daughter and another girl were invited. They drove through the snow ... slowly... to the Annapolis Mall, had lunch at the California Kitchen (it was an early release day due to testing) and shopped. My daughter only bought a pack of Webkinz cards (I have ingrained the Cheap DNA well into her genetic make-up, thank heavens).
When she got back, I was a bit miffed for two reasons... one, they didn't wear seatbelts. Two, the girl's mother, whom I trusted, let them shop the mall alone. Maybe I'm too cautious, but they are only 12 (the birthday girl just turned 13).
I would have liked to have known that was the plan.
THREAD? What thread?
Sorry...
How's the snow in Georgia, Miss Peach?

| | Re The "S" word is coming! The "S" word is coming! | | I already did. She apologized, explained that she was in constant phone contact (she was in the mall, too, getting a facial). I smiled and just let her know that perhaps I'm over protective, but just wanted to let her know. I think we handled it very well. She is very nice, and very good to my daughter... they like her because she is so respectful towards them. So I'm sure she understands we are just more strict than they are.

| | Re The "S" word is coming! The "S" word is coming! | | One of my friends here had rented a regular limo for her son for his b-day...they screwed up the order, and instead of the limo, they got the HummerLimo. Imagine a bunch of early teen boys, getting to ride around in one. They were in HEAH-VEN.
Yeah, it's snowing here. Ho hum. How's the traffic, Melanie?

| | Re The "S" word is coming! The "S" word is coming! | | The stretch hummers are a hit at prom time here, you have to order yours early so you are sure you can have one for prom. But, they can seat a lot of kids. I think like a dozen kids... if I'm not mistaken.
Every time I've been in a stretch, I try to figure out where pieces are welded together and I get nervous that it's not easy to manuver and it won't hold up to a crash. I know I'm paranoid. This is the same reason I have trouble on carnival rides too :p
Our local mall has a rule that children under 16 have to be accompanied by a parent. They made the rule after a 14 year old girl had sex with an adult she met online in the mall parking lot. He strangled her during the sex and "accidentially" killed her. It caused a lot of controversy, and then they banned kids from shopping alone. But, having worked at that same mall, I can tell you, no one is enforcing the rule. It's a shame they don't.
There have been other, less publicly known stories, and I don't really blame you for being protective. On the other hand, I see the other mom's perspective too. It can't be easy knowing how much slack to give them, and I can remember being that age and how much one parent's rules differed from another's. |

| | Re The "S" word is coming! The "S" word is coming! | | It was LOVELY. It only ended up snowing for about 30-45 minutes. Just enough for the kids to get out, play in it, have a snowball fight, get good and cold, then come in. Then the snow stopped and a light rain came back and washed it all away. I was hoping it would last a little longer, but at the same time glad, because it meant my friends didn't have to cancel their son's Eagle Scout Court of Honor ceremony, and everyone could get out to get to it, except for those folks who needed to travel very far.
I was also glad because we don't have "good" winter gloves for the kids - they are so rarely needed at all, we only own stretchy knit gloves. And those are no good for snow, they get wet too quickly. The disappearance of the snow meant no fighting over having to come in before they were ready.
And I got to try out my new video camera!

| | Re The "S" word is coming! The "S" word is coming! | | LOL. So I'm guessing in Alabama you don't have "school gloves," "dress gloves," and "playing outside gloves?"
(Just went to Target for my annual replenishing, too... they are disposable items.) |

| | Re The "S" word is coming! The "S" word is coming! | | Shoot, we're lucky to have "gloves" at all! Do you know how hard it is to keep up with where they're at in the house?! When something gets worn maybe once or twice a MONTH, then yeah, you tend to have as few as possible, and you still lose them.

You don't have a three-drawer bin in your coat closet just for hats and gloves? This is confusing to me. |

| | Re The "S" word is coming! The "S" word is coming! | | Wow. I seldom wear a hat in winter, since my coat has a hood, but I have two hats in the closet, one wool and one fleece. Only one pair of gloves, though, which I keep in my coat pocket.
When the kids were small, I clipped mitts and gloves and hats to one of those multilayer skirt hangers. I also had a dishpan on the top shelf for storing them. Never had room for a three-drawer bin.

Fun fact: I do not own a hat. | Fun fact: most people in snowy places don't bother wearing hats. It would mess up your hair
I do have 1 hat that I bought in Florida actually... but I haven't worn it this year. I do, however, have about six pairs of gloves. All but the knit ones that I leave in my car for an emergency have been used this year. I prefer the kind with leather on the outside and cashmere inside. At least three pairs are black, lol. Most of them get shoved in a coat pocket, because it's only cold enough to wear gloves when I go to work, not when I come home from work. Unless I can't keep my hands on the steering wheel, I don't like to wear gloves.
I've only been wearing three of my coats so far this year -- my cashmere coat to work, my 3/4 length belted leather coat when I go out, and my ski jacket when I work my second job. It gets thrown on a dirty floor, and I carry drywall in it, so I don't want to wear anything I care too much about. |
