| | My soon to be 14-year-old wants to have a poker party with his buddies for his b-day.
We're having pizza and pop - probably have some snacks (chips, popcorn, the like) for them to munch on.
Any ideas on prizes/giveaways? I had thought about the pens that have shredded money in the barrels (Jer thought that was a good idea), but I think I need a couple more things.

| | What about a little "case" of chips & cards for the guys (if you can find a reasonable price for them). That way, they have their own small stack of poker chips and a deck of cards to play anytime.

| | I'll have to ask about the root beer. Not all of them will drink it, but it doesn't have caffiene, so it's a better choice than Mountain Dew (of course, they are not staying overnight, so what do I care? )
The hats and glasses are a great idea, MJ. I had thought about visors but not the sunglasses.

| | are you sure that root beer doesn't have caffeine?
I think decks of cards to give the boys is a cute idea. You can probably get them from OTC of the dollar store. It would be really cute if you could get cards with the dogs playin poker on the back. |

| | They have root beer with caffeine ( I think Barq's is with) and A & W that I believe is without. Others, I am not sure about!

| | Barq's DEFINITELY has caffeine in it! I got on a root beer kick when I was preggo with Sean, and had gotten used to root beer not having caffeine in it. I picked up Barq's without checking the label. I had two big glasses one night when I was pretty far along , and BOY HOWDY did he have a party that night!
But Mug and most, if not all, of the store brands are caffeine free.

Did you think of renting a table? Sometimes it's fun to play on the real deal. |

Any ideas on prizes/giveaways? | For prizes, here are some possible ideas, depending on how you're structuring the games.
iTunes gift card Clear plastic cards
box of plastic chips (cheap but nice to have)
A bigger prize could be an actual poker set, which can sometimes be found at a reasonable price
Erik's suggested book is classic, required reading for aspiring players. |

| | I was informed last night in no uncertain terms that no one else likes root beer except my son.
Nekid women are RIGHT OUT. So are gift cards to PPV TV.
I like JP's suggestions...and I'll go to the Dollar Store this weekend and see if we can't find some good cheap stuff. We had picked up some clear cards at Disney when we were there several years ago, and everyone loves them...that's a cool idea.

| | I got them from my daughter for Xmas. I haven't had a chance to use them yet, but I'm teaching them poker.
You know what I'd love to see? All the presidential candidates play no-limit hold-em on TV. I think you'd learn more about them in that setting than you would in these fakey-fake debates.
They'd never do it, though. It's too revealing, and too much like a real debate. Of course, it's about the personality and the mind, rather than the issues. But that's a sight above hearing how well they can sling their rhetoric.
And seeing how someone deals with a bad beat is valuable info.
I was flipping channels and saw someone suggest this on the Colbert Report the other night.
