| | It became illegal to bill a customer more for credit vs cash in CT a long time ago. Now they claim they are "discounting" for cash, rather than charging a premium for credit so it's "legal-ish." |

You can't rob a gas station if nearly all the transactions are credit. | Sure you can... fraudulent credit cards. That's why gas stations have their pumps set to shut off at $75 on credit transactions. Business & Technology | Fill 'er up? Many credit cards won't | Seattle Times Newspaper
Yeah, the gas station owner will get his money (up to $75) but who knows how long it takes or how often it happens at his station.

| | 3.52 last weekend. I didn't bother checking today on the way in. (Nebraska is usually a little higher than Iowa)
We ALWAYS had to liscense our bikes when I was growing up...I remember every year Mom drove us down to City Hall and we'd get the sticker and put it on the seat bar.
I thought the cash v. credit thing was a national law...I haven't seen discounts for cash in the Midwest for many many years.

Fraudulent credit cards don't put the employees at risk the way a hold-up does. | Of course not. But the discussion had been about costs to owners (which is why they are offering discounts for cash transactions). Around here I don't hear of many gas-station holdups, probably because all the gas stations have the bulletproof glass/put your money in the metal drawer counters so robbers can't get at the attendant.

| | According to GasBuddy, it's down to $3.64 at Sam's now, and a friend at church told us last night he actually got gas for $3.57 up in North Alabama earlier this week.

| | Our cheapest close gas is still $4.09. We've seen a whopping 6 cents price drop since oil prices started declining. Do I think I'm being ripped off? Yes.

| | Any price drop we experience is likely to be temporary. I'm accepting the fact that gas will be $4-$5 all the time for the next year or two. It sucks, but it is what it is.

We're at 3.45 here today. If it goes to 1.89 I will be happy. Nothing less.

| | $3.78 as of last night was the lowest price I spotted.
The good news is our prices are lower than New York again. That makes me happy.
The other good news is we are in line with the national average again. That also makes me happy.
But I still think we're being manipulated, and it's way too much. That makes me very unhappy.
I also think this is just the teaser to get us driving more again. As soon as people stop making cuts to their driving, the gas prices will be up up up again, reaching new highs once again.
I'm glad at least that the lower prices will coincide with my road trip. I can't wait to see how much better people south of me have it! :p |

| | We are extremely blessed right now (if you can call it that) with 3.43/gal.
Someone was talking on Bob and Tom the other morning and said that people showing relief, excitment at $3.50/gal are playing into the gas companies manipulation becase a year ago, that excitement was $2.50/gal and now they have us thinking $3.50 is sweet.
(I hope that makes sense. I had a terribly busy day yesterday and stayed up WAY too late watching our little Shawn Johnson on the Olympics last night - she's from my state, just a few miles away, actually).

| | So if you have been following the whole story about how they come up with the price of gasoline and have been incredibly confused, this "debate" from The Colbert Report explains it all. Seriously - outside the comic snark, the explanation about how it's the speculators and not solely supply/demand that determines the costs per gallon was the best I've heard, I actually "get" it now.

| | I keep forgetting to post the story about the station in Omaha that had a glitch and was selling gas for .35/gal (yes, you read that correctly) for two hours last week, and now I can't find it.
They didn't suspect a thing until the clerk looked out the window and saw people at the pump talking excitedly on their cell phones, and the line was backed up several blocks.
We're at around $3.45 here. Woo hoo (said unenthusiastically), I'm sure it will go up again just in time for the holiday wknd.

| | I was at a pump in July where the signs said "$4.11" and the pump meter said "$4.05." Sure enough, it was charging me $4.05. I said something about it to Hubby, who was sitting in the passenger seat with the window down, and the woman pumping gas into the big SUV on the other side of the pump called over, with a tone of sad resignation, "It's $4.11 on this side." Made me glad the new car has the gas tank on the right instead of the left, or I'd have been at her pump. (Well actually that'd only have saved me about $0.66 with 11 gallons of gas. But we never really break it down like that, do we?)

| | I saw a news report about a gas station that sold its gas for $.35/gallon on purpose. They'd been told by the EPA that they had to replace their gas tanks, and it just wasn't cost effective, so they had a going out of business sale. I'd have thought the taxes on the gas were higher than that and they could have sold out just as fast at $2/gallon, so it was a very generous move on the part of the station owner.
