| | Bob left the van door unlocked last night and somebody got in and took my car stereo. Bob is all upset with himself. I'm not so much. Now he won't complain when I buy something geekier

| | Even if you don't miss the stereo much, I'm sorry you got robbed. It's an icky feeling.

| | Yeah. It is an icky feeling. I'm pretty paranoid right now. A few weeks back we had gunshots right across the street. It's not the same neighborhood I moved into 10 years ago.

| | I'd be very careful about putting in something "geekier" so fast. Many times, when your car/house is broken into, a serious thief will note where you are and return to the scene of the crime - this time in an effort to pawn something brand new instead of something used.
You can take my advice or ignore it, but remember, I handled insurance claims for 15 years... and the repeat rate on someone being burglarized was fairly significant. |

| | I'm with you on this one, Jeff. I put back in the original radio (Tweeter did it for $15 for me) and will wait a month or more before I get the new one. I'm also going to get the auto-locking system repaired on my car so that I can ensure all the doors are locked with a single click. I'm not going to get an alarm though. My idiot neighbor has one that goes off all the time, and everybody just ignores it. We are so used to tuning hers out, that I don't think having one would do me any good.

| | Sorry to hear this, Amy. I've had even crappy stereos stolen out of my cars in the past. At least twice (not in the same place). Someone stole the stock radio out of my old Hyundai long ago. I had taken to leaving the door unlocked because an earlier break-in had ruined the external door locks and I used to have to climb in through the hatch if I wanted to lock the door.

| | I had a car where the driver's door wouldn't unlock from the outside, but that was OK because the window in the passenger door behind the driver's door had a window you could push down with your hands. So I would push the window down, reach in and unlock the driver's door, then pull the glass back up and get in the car. And I did this in the Lefrak City area of Queens, where I parked my car and left it unattended for 8 or more hours a couple days a week. No one ever broke in for anything. (But it was broken into back when it was newer and I was still living in Buffalo - smashed the glass to get my briefcase that had some papers and a pair of shoes in it.)

MJ loses more shoes... | Hubby says it's not that I lose them, it's that they run away screaming.
