I really hate facebook...

I have a page, but it has just bare information, and I've only been there a couple of times. A former high school friend actually found me last night. I really don't have any interest in hanging around there much. Social sites don't really do it for me - I like bulletin boards where conversations are contained.

I have an account with not even my real name (because I'd die if an employer googled me and found ANYTHING) just so I can keep in touch with a cousin in Europe who can't be bothered to write an email but can use facebook (go figure).

I sign on because he sent me a quiz and wants to see our "likeness". I take the quiz. I'm bombarded with ads that are about weightloss. I vote on an ad that I don't like it. Now I have to put why I don't like it. Rinse, repeat. All the ads are for weight loss apparently.

Oh, and in the ads, it tells me my age and gender. Cute, huh?

I close out of facebook before I even get to Cousin's profile. 16 more facebook windows pop up. I try to close them, but the program is not responding. Don't know if that's a Vista sucks issue or a Facebook sucks issue, but I've never had that issue on another site.

I'm so done with facebook. Yuck!

Are you using Firefox? I've never had any ad problems the two or three times I've been to Facebook.

I hate Facebook too, but for awhile I thought it was really exciting. I found a whole bunch of friends on it but now it's just lame for me. The only useful thing I am using it for now is I am part of a society called "The Friends of McNabs Island", which is a nature conservation group, basically. I help them with promotion so I set up a Facebook group for it and now we have so many more members because everyone loves joining groups on Faecbook and it seems like we are getting way more exposure out there for it because of that.

But then I realise stuff like that makes Facebook less valuable because it has kind of turned into a marketing/spam place, which drives people away. I get so many useless application invitations, I have blocked most of them. - - Please add the "spank me" application, or "buy me drinks" application. Whooo-boy!

My kids use Facebook all the time, and really have no problems with it. They both use Vista, and firefox. Maybe it was the ad you clicked on Margaret.

Apparently, Facebook does have some value in certain career fields. People who need networking or need to show that people are interested in them find a great deal of value there. It helps authors sell books, media personalities build a more loyal audience, etc.

In turn, this translates to economic value because if you can prove that a lot of people follow you and are interested in you, employers place a monetary value on that. Advertisers are also hot for it because people are more likely to buy things their friends enjoy. So, if they can determine that you bought a weight loss product and then show ads to your friends about that product, your friends are more likely than the general population to buy that product.

In my field, for business networking LinkedIn seems to be the hot app, with Friendster a distant second.

I like Facebook. It's simpleminded enought for me to use, I can keep up with people I wouldn't email or phone, and I just don't add any more apps than I have now. Too many "add all your friends" to get results turned me off. I love Scrabbulous, though, and participate in several interest groups.
