| | Which begs the question:
Is "pretty bad" *worse* than "bad" or *better*?

Logic would say that pretty bad is better than bad. |

| | You'd think so, wouldn't you? But I'd say no. Pretty bad is worse than bad, but not as bad as really bad:
Bad
Pretty Bad
Really Bad

| | Sadly, I do think most people use pretty bad, to reflect worse than bad, but it's probably so they don't come off as complainers. The "pretty" somehow lessens the severity of the "bad", even though it's bad.
For example: My hives are pretty f-ing BAD!!!! In this case, I mean really really bad, but it sounds nicer, doesn't it? |

| | Wouldn't pretty badly be an adverb, and pretty bad be an adjective? |

| | Yeah--I guess. I am thinking----My headache is pretty bad. There it is a predicate adjective, to it is definitely an adjective. I guess my first thought was ...hurt pretty badly---making it an adverb.

| | I was pondering this question today when I thought about "pretty sure."
"Pretty sure," to me, means, I'm almost sure. I am less than certain.
So, if "pretty" is indicating "less than" I think it also means "less than" in relation to "good" as well. | | | |
