To recap: In the Spring my FIL was getting lost in his car. As in missing-persons-report, gone-for-over-12-hours lost. After that happened twice we took the car away and the hospital said he had some form of dementia. He went to one neurologist appointment but not the second, but it was evident that he's got some serious losses (doesn't know what county he lives in, for example, and he's lived in this county for 30+ years). He had scripts for high blood pressure (which he hadn't been taking) and high blood sugar (which he hadn't been taking) and they added Aricept. MIL was to make sure he took his meds, SIL took Health Care Proxy duties, Hubby enacted Power of Attorney for the bills etc.
Last week FIL was disoriented, weak, clammy and went to the hospital with blood sugar over 600. Not only had he not been taking his meds (MIL had no patience with this task apparently and gave up) but he had pancreatitis too. IV antibiotics started, insulin given, etc. Now it's just over a week later and his blood sugar is still out of whack and some sort of scan shows a mass in his pancreas. The "C" word has been mentioned. Positive thoughts for the whole family would be appreciated.

Thoughts and prayers from me as well. I've been going through this type of dismay for over a year and it's really tough emotionally and physically on all involved. |

the other word they're likely mentioning is a pancreatic pseudocyst. Nasty thing, that one, but better than that C word in regard to pancreas.

Ugh. FIL discharged today, belligerent with hospital staff trying to teach him how to give himself insulin (which he needs to give himself nightly) and check his blood sugar. A nurse is coming by tomorrow to make sure he and his family knows how to do these things. And he has to have follow-up appointments with a specialist (what kind I don't know).
What I'm not hearing: regular visiting nurse check-ins to make sure he's taking his meds and logging his sugar; what kind of specialist he has to go to; and what the whole thing was about his pancreas. So I am "ugh" right now and not predicting a lot of positive things in the next few weeks. And Hubby starts school again Monday and can't be over at his parents almost-daily like he's been all summer, but I'm pretty sure he'll be pressured to be there...
