Unfortunately, I don't have a link yet, because the MD Gazette hasn't updated their web page. My husband, son, 2 other leaders, and 2 other scouts were featured in a front page story. Last summer, they helped a family whose canoe had flipped on the Shenandoah river. On September 11, they'll be receiving a national award for heroism for their part in the rescue.

I'll post a link to the story once the web site has been updated.

About that Web site... sigh... it probably won't update until Monday afternoon... and if you're looking Monday afternoon and it still isn't there, call the newsroom and tell them. Remember, the Gazette is the red-headed stepchild of the Capital-Gazette newsgroup.

I had hoped to see the story today, but that's really too much to expect. I was really pleased that nothing more newsworthy came along to bounce them off the front page.

I scanned the article into a word document (works better than photoshop for text). If it's a copyright violation, just take it down or let me know and I will.

Wow, no offense to your hometown paper, but that's a lousy website for a newspaper

As Elyzabeth says, stepchild to a larger paper. They're lucky to have a web site at all. And I would never have heard the whole story if the other scout leaders hadn't thought it was a big deal.

How wonderful!!! I remember when you told us the story of what they did. They are heroes and It's so wonderful that they're being recognized!!!

And, have you ever heard of a newsroom that doesn't have free coffee?

Journalists and coffee... it's kind of one can't exist without the other!

It's very exciting, and with school starting up and back-to-school night for Scouts, this should be a big plus for recruiting as well. Bob worries about that since we only have 8 boys. We should have a 9th shortly, though.

It will grow, Judy! And 8 boys is actually kind of fun! I know with the patrol systems and all that it can be difficult with so few kids, but everybody will get a chance at leadership at least!

I know it will grow. The cub pack has about 8 Webelos 2 boys and 20+ Webelos 1s. It's scary how fast it could grow. Bob worries, though.

Judy, congrats to your guys on the recognition...I remember when you told us about it here and thought it was pretty incredible then!!!

The Gazette is treating us really well - and so is our parish.

We went up to Scout headquarters on 9/11 for the guys to receive their awards. Medals for the men, certificates for the scouts. Matthew was a little miffed that all he got was a "piece of paper thanking him for doing a good job" until I pointed out that it was the sort of paper he can list on college and scholarship applications. He still wants a medal, but he's happier.

The following Sunday, the pastor presented certificates from the Archbishop - at the best attended service. It broke Matthew's heart to miss Sunday School to attend.

2 new scouts signed up this week.

The Gazette is supposed to be running a follow-up story today. It's going to be in the neighborhood section, so not on the web site. I'll scan and post it. The reporter who wrote the initial story contacted Bob to ask if it was OK to put contact information in the story (YES!).
