| | Gustav | | This storm is scary bad.
It's really nice being out of Florida and not having to listen to weeks of non-stop coverage about storms that may or may not hit. It feels odd though, not knowing as much about the storms as I used to.
Gustav is going to be bad. Even if it's not a direct hit on New Orleans, it's going to cause real problems somewhere. I was watching the evacuations this morning, and it breaks my heart. I'm so glad that people are leaving, but so sad that they have to.
Melanie - are you far enough away, or is that is scary one for you too?
And then Hanna is building near the Bahamas.

| | I'm far enough away, unless it turns *really* badly. We should get some rain out of it next week, though. I'd be far enough away with Gustav even if I were back in Montgomery.
On the bright side with the storms, though, the lower half of AL is finally out of drought conditions! Not even "abnormally dry" anymore.

| | Well that part is good!
I haven't had the news on in hours so I haven't heard whats happening in Cuba, but Gustav was a 4 already. It will breakdown over the mnts in Cuba, but rebuild fast in the warm waters of the gulf. |

...... in the warm waters of the gulf. |
One newscast I heard tonight said that coming off of Cuba, the waters are still a bit cool, then then get warmer closer to the coastline. So, it may come off Cuba closer to 3 but depending how long it lingers off the US coast, will tell if it intensifies. It doesn't have to travel the distance in the gulf that
Katrina did, it is just shooting up from Cuba. They pretty well have it narrowed to hit somewhere between Houston and Mobile.
The meteorologist said it was amazing how much all the "models" agreed on the path.

| | Yikes, I thought it would breakdown over the mountains for Cuba and then restrengthen. If it goes into the gulf as a 4, it may get even stronger. |

| | Mandatory evacuations begin tomorrow. The storm is predicted to be bigger and stronger than Katrina, twice as wide with 100+mph winds.

| | Last I heard, Gustav had dropped to a 2. I hope the storm dissipates instead of strengthening, but given the mandatory evacuation already in effect, that might be dangerous for the next round - which is likely to come before the end of THIS hurricane season.

| | We should see what's left of Gustav after five tomorrow afternoon. He could cause some heavy rain and 35 MPH wind gusts. |

| | It does seem like everyone got lucky with this one. I was fearful it would be much worse, but I don't think we know the full extent of the damage yet.
Now the next two are on track to hit in Georgia or N. Florida later this week! |

| | Tommy and I were in New Orleans for Labor Day Weekend and got to experience the joys of the evacuation. 17 hours to drive from NOLA to Birmingham... In general, everything was calm, orderly and there doesn't seem to be much harm done.
