It's the first case like this that we know of, but as even the father said in one of the stories, the allegations about her being unfit to be the custodial parent are about a lot more than just the fact the woman was a foster parent. However, if this becomes a trend, we will have an even harder time finding the foster parents we need to care for the kids coming into care, and in some areas it's already a struggle.
And yes, some foster parents are in it for the money, but it's like getting pregnant to get a bigger TANF check - it doesn't work out well that way. The amount of money provided for a foster child's care doesn't generally come close to covering the real costs of having this child in your home, even if you scrimp and save and provide things, er, "differently" than your contract spells out (like giving the foster child hand-me-downs instead of buying him new clothing). A study came out this past spring that said nationally foster parents are under-reimbursed.
