| | That's Right (You're Not From Texas) | | Channeling Lyle Lovett here.
I'll be in Austin for a conference from 10/18-21, then heading up to Cincinnati for a second conference from 10/22-25. I'll be in meetings all day long but I'll have evenings free and will have a car. Anyone have suggestions for off-the-beaten-track things to do? I've looked at a few guidebooks, but if you have a favorite restaurant, let me know. And, I'm taking Shane - we haven't done a family road trip since before boot camp.

If you're up for a big adventure, you could go to Mobile Alabama and visit the USS Alabama Battleship. That is the ship they filmed... can't think of it but a Steven Segal movie on it (with Tommy Lee Jones) |

I once had an old girlfriend from Austin, but I've never been there. |

| | Re That's Right (You're Not From Texas) | | My favorite steak place in Austin is Dan McKluskey's, 301 East 6th Street (512) 473-8924. Lots of talent has passed through 6th St over the years and it has earned its own reputation. It's been awhile since I have been there, but the music was always loud and the beer cold. Iron Works BBQ is also in that area but avoid if you can. It's been given more than one chance to have a good day. Quote: |

| Yep and the Congress Ave bridge is home to many bats that people line up to see. Then there's the big dome looking thing at the end of Congress, but who cares about that when there's 6th St. http://www.6street.com/ http://austin.about.com/cs/bats/p/bats.htm

| | Re That's Right (You're Not From Texas) | | OMG, I want to go to Austin more than anywhere else in the US!!! The bats- I would LOVE to see the bats! And the statue of Stevie Ray would be like Mecca to me. Please take a pic of it for me, 'k?
Mark says to go to blues clubs. Also, his favourite restaurants are the good Tex-Mex ones. |

| | Re That's Right (You're Not From Texas) | | Okay, we'll see what kind of pictures my new cell phone takes. (I accidentally laundered my last cell phone and my camera last weekend - hard on electronics.) The hotel is a block from the bats, so I'll definitely check that out. Thanks for the tip, Slick. Shane loves a good steak so we'll check that one out. :-)

| | Re That's Right (You're Not From Texas) | | Last time I was in Texas, we spent a night in Fredericksburg (can't remember why) and drove through Lukenbach on the way back to San Antonio. Actually we stopped (if we'd simply driven through, it would have taken about 15 seconds at 20 mph) and spent an hour wandering through the general store and the empty dance hall. Shane was in grade school at the time - he got up on stage and pretended he was Willie. Then, we chased away the chickens that were roosting on the hood of the rental car and drove on. Great fun.
Can't smoke anything - asthma.

| | Re That's Right (You're Not From Texas) | | Uh oh. Jon said "Willie" and "karaoke" in the same sentence.
Cindy's Mark may have some competition on his hands.

| | Re That's Right (You're Not From Texas) | | My boyfriend's SIL works for Willie. I get to hear some great stories! I'll be having dinner with her tomorrow night. I plan to ask her if she's heard this song.
No suggestions for Tx... Ain't never been there but the brochure looks nice. | | |
