Biathlon

Along the lines of "why is snowboarding a sport...."

The Biathlon.

Do I have this right? Is it just like randomly shooting at a target and then randomly skiing long distance?

Please help me, I don't understand....

Actually it is a sport that takes amazing talent.

You're working your heart rate up to pretty much as high as possible while you're cross-country skiing. Then, in a matter of seconds, you need to lower your heart rate and calm yourself down in order to have any accuracy with the rifle.

Not so easy on either count.

Ah, I had the events switched. I guess it makes more sense to have the skiing first and THEN shoot.

But it still smacks of randomness to me.

random? OMG! I'd say that the last individual race [10K women] was one of the best things that had happened to the Olympics so far. It was great from the first shooting till the last, and as a total surprise to me Forsberg/Poiree did not win anything. They were in the lead the first three shootings. They were the only two women who'd won this race during the World Cup starts. But then, it was not random, it was fast as the rollercoaster ride.

I love biathlon, must be the part of that Russian thing. Oh, and they don't have judges who rule the ball there, ain't that nice?

I just mean it's weird cause the skiing and the shooting seem to be two entirely UNrelated events. Whose idea was it to throw the two of them together?

Why not cross-country skiing ending with a ski jump?? That would be cool.

Or speed skating into figure skating, with every race ending in a triple lutz.

Or... hockey ending in a quiet game of curling.

But skiing and shooting? I just don't get it!

I just wouldn't want to be in the stands watching, particularly if I were wearing camo

Frazz, unless you hide in the tress dressed like a deer, I think you'd be just fine.

Val, here is an article on the history of the biathlon. It is based on the way people in northern climates hunt in the winter - on skis. I love the biathlon, we followed it faightfully when we lived in Edmonton.

1. None of the sports you've cited when mixed would provide the challenge of regulating your heartrate and concentration the way the biathlon does.

2. I'm all for hockey ending with boxing. IMO the fights in the rink is the best part of the sport. I hang out on the clips where they show the hockey players in the NHL punching the crap out of each other and then wrestling them to the floor, then punching the crap out of each other some more.
