| | Oh, gwizflap | | The Red Sox's Jason Varitek fractured his elbow in last night's game.
Varitek's not a Nomar or a Pedro, but he's a key player nonetheless. He's an excellent catcher -- has to handle Nomo's splitters and Wakefield's knuckleballs -- and he's usually been good at the plate. (Lately he's been hot -- 16 RBI in the last 17 games.)
Scott Hatteberg, his replacement, is a decent player defensively but isn't as good as a hitter. Granted he's seen limited time this season, but he's still below the Mendoza Line.
I will be really, really bummed if this helps scuttle the Sox's Series hopes.

But I do have to say that that was one heckuva catch
I am just totally bummed that he had to hit the turf elbow first to get the ball.

| | Sorry about the injury. I hate it when anyone is hurt, except a major player on a team that is opposing us. If Shaq broke a leg this afternoon, I wouldn't exactly cry.
Speaking of opposing teams! Ladies, guess who Boston is playing this weekend? Ailsa, I thought we didn't have to worry about each other until The Series, but I was wrong.
Andrea
thinking a Series between Philadelphia and Boston would really get lively here on EA

| | Yeah, I'd forgotten about that too! I knew the Sox were playing a NL team (there was the obligatory story about pitchers having to take batting practice), but I didn't realize it was Philly until just now, when I turned on the radio.
That would be an interesting Series, Andrea! Can't wait.

| | Okay, you ladies got one. That's okay, I'm feeling generous.
You can't have a sweep though, all right? We're not giving those out in Philly this month.
Whatcha all think of interleague play, by the way? Still feels weird to me, like they are exhibition games and not real games. I can't work up any "Beat those Sox!" vibes....
?

| | I can't get used to those interleague games either.
Although it does make it interesting in a city with more than one team. Like, oh... I don't know.... um, New York?
Sara
Looking forward to next weekend's Yankee/Mets series

Sara -
The Yankees/Mets thing is the single reason I can think of to be a New Yorker. (That's not a slam at New York, I promise. The city is just a little too big for me, I prefer Philly.) I'm sorry, that and Broadway.
Anyway, while it's my job to hate all New York sports team with venom that boils in my blood, I wouldn't mind spending my next life as a New Yorker so that I could experience Yankees/Mets.
Andrea
wondering if she'll get struck by lightening for even thinking that

| | Interleague play reminds me of a kid who goes to a new school for the first time ... you may have heard a little about it, but you don't know your way around, you don't really know anyone, and they don't know you. After a few years you may feel right at home (then again, maybe not), but right now it's really strange, for you and for them.
Maybe a few more seasons or so (once AL teams and NL teams have played more interleague games and developed some sort of history) I might get used to interleague play. But right now, I agree with Andrea -- it just feels weird.
