| | Business Trip, or "There Has to Be a Better Way" | | 2:30pm - arrived at Syracuse airport with a migraine. Took my meds and a nap. Plan: 5:10 plane arrives at JFK at 6:15, take AirTrain to Long Island Rail Road, LIRR to repair shop, get car from repair shop and head to Eastern Star Chinese Auction fundraiser in the same town; go home after fundraiser.
4:30pm - airline staff announced we would not be boarding at 4:35 for the 5:10 flight because the plane wasn't there from JFK yet due to bad weather at JFK. airline staff fed us cheese and crackers and other snacks.
5:45pm - airline staff started boarding on the plane that just arrived.
6pm - airline staff announced to the planeful of passengers that JFK told them don't bother taking off until 8pm since there's no place to land at JFK due to weather and traffic. airline staff told passengers the weather was so bad at JFK, they didn't want to try landing there anyway.
7pm - airline staff said they got JFK to bump us up the list due to the number of people who were trying to make connections to Sacramento, Orlando, and other sunny places.
7:15 or so - airplane left Syracuse. Bumpy flight. Very bad as we neared JFK. More snacks.
A Little After 8pm - got to JFK. Waited to get a runway. Then waited, parked on the tarmac, while they found a gate for us to go to. Then waited, parked by the gate, for the ground crew to bring the platform-thingy over so we could step out the door onto something instead of jumping out the door and falling X feet.
8:30pm - took AirTrain in wrong direction. Helped ticket agent translate directions to a deaf guy who was headed to London. Got on AirTrain in the right direction.
8:58pm - ran through the AirTrain lobby, in a skirted suit with heels, wheeled suitcase behind and huge briefcase on shoulder, to get to the 8:59 train to the town with the auto repair shop where my car was parked. Effort thwarted at the doors to the Long Island RR where one set of doors was out of order and the other blocked by two maintenance guys polishing the floors with an extension cord running across my path.
8:59pm - got to the LIRR platform just in time to see the 8:59 train close its doors.
9:32 - got on the next train.
10pm - picked up my car from the repair shop (to which it must return tomorrow for new motor mounts, transmission mounts, and oil and transmission fluid changes; the needed exhaust system total replacement is scheduled for the end of this month).
10:15pm - got home.
So... not only did I get to eat animal crackers and chocolate chip cookies instead of Chinese food, but I got home LATER than I would have if I'd been at the Chinese Auction *and* drove my little old lady friend home!
One of these days I'd like to take a BORING trip.

Not fun.
At least you're home and safe.

| | Re Business Trip, or "There Has to Be a Better Way" | | Argh. I hate business trips. Had a doozy last time myself.
I only do them once or twice a year and just marvel at people who travel all the time...how do they do it and keep sane???
Glad you are home! Don't go away again anytime soon.

| So far I'm looking at Syracuse again May 10-11, Syracuse again sometime in mid-June, and Lake George (hopefully!) first week of May.

I think of that movie every time I see the SmartCarts.

| | Re Business Trip, or "There Has to Be a Better Way" | | Lake George is the big annual meeting and I was told *pointedly* and *several times* last year that it was highly unusual for me (as mere "staff") to be going, but they wanted to introduce me to the upstate Directors. Now that I've struggled to make myself invaluable, I'm crossing my fingers that I get to go. The resort they stay at is awesome!

| | Re Business Trip, or "There Has to Be a Better Way" | | My flights two and from San Diego last week were fairly uneventful--much better than the trip from hell back from Madison, Wisconsin, for a conference last year. I got stuck in Chicago because American cancelled (not postponed, not delayed, cancelled) my flight to Newark. I ended up having to stay overnight, without baggage, at a hotel that I had to pay for (the Army reimbursed me, but the airline should have paid) after standing waiting for the shuttle for an hour and a half, and flew into LaGuardia the next day. Did I mention I was six months pregnant at the time and neither patient nor inclined to stand around waiting? Needless to say, my baggage did not make it with me. I also had to track down another instructor to take over my class for that morning since I wouldn't be back in time.
This trip, by comparison, went without a hitch.

| | Re Business Trip, or "There Has to Be a Better Way" | | Forgot to tell y'all. My last trip to Syracuse (Mother's Day) was much better than my Easter trip. For example, here's the car that Budget Rent-A-Car gave me to drive for $20 for the day: http://www.eaforums.com/gallery/albu...ustang%201.jpg

| | Re Business Trip, or "There Has to Be a Better Way" | | Hubby was insanely jealous. Which is why I asked the IT directors at the meeting "who brought a digital camera?" (I knew someone would have one, after all, they ARE the techie people). I've printed the pictures blown up in all their glory and hung 'em where Hubby can see them and drool and mope. I am evil.
