| | Best job/resume places besides Monster? | | DH's job is currently somewhat uncertain (Winn Dixie stores, which you may have heard is in bankruptcy and trying to straighten themselves out) at the moment, so I thought it would be best to go ahead and get his resume spiffed up and start posting. Any recommendations on places besides Monster.com?

| | Re Best job/resume places besides Monster? | | I'm trying to think... I think hubby's last job came from a recruiter finding him on Monster, but I had better luck with local services. I don't know what your DH does, but sometimes it helps to contact places thought of as temp agencies. They often do a lot of permanent placements as well. I know that hubby's job two jobs ago came through one of them. |

| | Re Best job/resume places besides Monster? | | Do they charge as much for a permanent placement as they do their temp placements, though? That's what DH did the job before Winn Dixie, and they took 1/3 of his pay for 2 or 3 months!

| | Re Best job/resume places besides Monster? | | I agree - local recruiters are probably best.
For on line I prefered careerbuilder.com to monster. |

| | Re Best job/resume places besides Monster? | | Snelling temp agency, if I remember right. It was a "temp" job, but he stuck with it, so it may be because it was technically temp that they charged him. Or maybe they "charged the company" but he got a lower pay, I don't even remember now.

| | Re Best job/resume places besides Monster? | | Well, the company is always going to pay more per hour than the employee makes, otherwise how would temp companies stay in business? In general, when I was handling temp payments for the company I worked for, we'd pay up to 2x the employee's hourly wage total. But most of those folks also had limited benefits from the agency. They still made a decent wage for their job class, but not as much as we paid. |

| | Re Best job/resume places besides Monster? | | I would recommend http://www.cvspot.com. If he has a speciality, such as training, hr, etc, the MBA Association (no you don't need to be an MBA) is looking for consultants.
He can use the 'free website' link in my sig line to create a personal profile that can be used on both cvspot.com and mbaassociation.org. |

| | Re Best job/resume places besides Monster? | | Oh, and BTW - does anyone know what the current preferences are for resumes? I know the preferences go in cycles, one year everybody wants plain, another year fancy, one year bullet style, one year paragraph style, etc. What's "hot" right now?

| | Re Best job/resume places besides Monster? | | It is vital right now to have your resume able to be read by screening software. Avoid nested tables, non-text images and odd fonts (Ariel & Times New Roman best).
Also, screening software looks for key words, so consider customizing for resume to each job you apply. Use key words found in the job description.
Also, if sending a resume versus applying through a website, always use a cover letter.
A few other ideas here: http://www.matthewnehrlingmba.com/in...review&id=1373 |

| | Re Best job/resume places besides Monster? | | I used to use a bunch of places other than Monster.com (careerbuilder.com, hotjobs.com, excitejobs, yahoo careers, jobfinder.com, and more), however; with the exception of yahoo, the entire above list has been bought by monster.com, so now you just get the same darn jobs over and over. Sucks.
dice.com is good for IT and tech work
check craigslist.com for your area - awesome place to look for work and lots more
check your papers online listings
if his skill is marketable, sign him up as a consultant on sites like guru.com that let you list for free.
Good luck! |

| | Re Best job/resume places besides Monster? | | I just found a really nice one: http://www.simplyhired.com
They're still in BETA, but I'm finding TONS of listings here. The search engine can be a little tricky if you mess up - I accidently used the scroll wheel inside one of the search refinement fields and couldn't fix it, so I had to start all over again, but it wasn't too bad.

| | Re Best job/resume places besides Monster? | | Go to Alexa.com, type in monster and get a list of the top 10 sites in that category. Haven't done it myself, but I'm guessing you'll see CareerBuilder.com, Hot Jobs @ Yahoo and the other really big one whose name escapes me now.
I didn't have good luck with Craig's List when I looked.
BTW, be prepared to get a ton of unsolicited job offers for sales positions if you make your resume public on any site.
Oh, just thought of one more thing. The federal government's site is USA jobs. I think you can get there through opm.gov. Anyway, they have jobs all over the country. |

| | Re Best job/resume places besides Monster? | | Thanks, George! We've got a fax zipping off this morning, keep y'all's fingers crossed.
OH! And I learned something VERY important the other day. When typing "craigslist" in one's browser bar, make very sure you get that "s" in the middle typed in! Otherwise you get porn!

| | Re Best job/resume places besides Monster? | | We have a new feature at the MBAA, a partnership with noheads.com that lists and allows you to bid on freelance projects. I noticed a lot that members here may be interested in, including writing, editing, art, conference speakers, web design, and research.
PM me if you want more info.. (no this isn't a service you have to pay for..) | | |
